One of them was Kathy Rosenberg who had ten years of working in a finance company and currently working at a big cloud computing company in California. She agreed to share her experience with current students:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a manager at a financial company in New York. It was a good job with excellent salary for someone who had a Bachelor\u2018s degree in Business Administration. I always believed that my career was stable until the 2008 financial crisis. Like many others, I was laid-off and depressed for few weeks but I went on to look for jobs. After six months and hundreds of denials, I realized that things were not going to improve in this job market so I made a major investment of time and money to pursue another career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI conducted research on job markets to determine what would be the next important trends. I had advices from several people that in the future, everything would be driven by technology so I decided to pursue a career in Information System Management (ISM). My first step was to take a few programming courses at vocational school to prepare myself where I did well and eventually got accepted into the ISM program at Carnegie Mellon. Since I already had a degree in business and work experiences, I did well in most business and management courses, although I struggled a bit in some technical courses. In the Capstone project, I and two other classmates worked on an extensive marketing project for a cloud computing company. The project did so well that the cloud company offered all three of us a full time job when we graduated. However, I wanted more than just an entry level position so I negotiated with them for better position. At the beginning, they did not like it but I persisted by leverage the knowledge and experience that I gained from my previous job. Finally they agreed to give me a senior management position. The pay-off from my two years investment in school has been enormous. My salary increased from $65,000 when I was at the financial company to $125,000 in the new position at the cloud computing company. I now have a great job with a lot of responsibilities and sixty five people work under me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy advice to all of you is: \u201cIt is never too late to start a new career regardless how old you are. I was 32 years old when I returned to school but now at 34, I already have a very good job. Age has nothing to do with learning and career so does not let it prevents you from getting what you want. Since I studied Business Administration, the transition into Information System Management is not too difficult. However it is important to conduct a thorough research for your \u201csecond career\u201d as you cannot make mistake &#8211; It is your future, your time, and your effort so make your decision wisely. Contrary to what many people think, it is possible to change career even when you are in middle age as there are plenty of opportunities if you know how to seize them. I do not consider myself as smart since there are many people who are much smarter than me but my strength is I am willing to put in my time and effort to achieve my career goal. I had many difficulties when returning to school as most of the classmates were younger and know more about technology than me. It was not easy at first but I am determined to succeed. What I had but they did not was my patients and strong will as I told myself \u201cThis is my second chance in life and I must make it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many wonderful opportunities in technology industry but to succeed, you need much more than just technical skills. You need teamwork skills since you are assigned to get things done in teams, not as individual. Today most technology companies have \u201cflatter structure\u201d which means they do not have several levels of management as before so you must learn to analyze situations and make decisions quickly on your own, without any support. This type of \u201cflatter\u201d hierarchy requires people to work together without a lot of direction so you are responsible for your own actions. Since no company can guarantee lifetime employment, the only real security come from your competencies which means you must continue to learn new things and monitor the market trends to make sure your skills are still needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany years ago, most companies were made up of many departments such as Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Information technology, and Human resources etc. Each has their own workers and they all work independently. Coordination among these departments was done by layers of management and decisions were made at appropriated level, usually from the top and often very slow. Today that type of structure is obsolete as failure to make decision means lost opportunities and losing money. In this global competitive market, decisions have to be made much more quickly and accurately than in the past. People who used to work in the \u201cHierarchy structure\u201d will fail in \u201cFlatter structure\u201d as they are not responsible and cannot make decision on their own. To succeed, you must learn to be responsible and accountable for your own actions and that is why you must have the problem solving skills. These skills are often not taught in school so you must learn them on your own by reading more. When I worked in the financial company, I did not make any decisions without checking with my boss and often my boss did not make decision until he checked with his boss. Today you are given certain role and responsibility and can make your own decisions within that given role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this type of work, you must learn to control your \u201cpersonal ego\u201d as the objective when working on a team is not to win for your personal glory but to win for the team and the company as a whole. The \u201cHero image\u201d or \u201cIndividual contribution\u201d has no value in this type of teamwork.\u00a0 Today information technology has change the flow of information in companies. Virtually everybody has computers, tablets, smartphones that allow them to access to all type of information so everyone know what is going on in the company as well as how people make decisions and how they impact the company. For example if sales are slow, everybody know and take actions. If customers are not happy, everybody knows too. Within a matter of hours things must change and change quickly as everybody is acting in respond to the information. The need for layers of managers to collect and send information to the top managers as in the hierarchical structure of the past has gone a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>Today, decision making is speed up quickly to react to information immediately and that is why efficiency and effectiveness are being measured automatically at all levels. When a cyber-attack happens, within minutes, everybody is informed and security teams immediately take actions and we often solve the problem within less than an hour.
