Solving unemployment problem<\/p>\n

There is a question among many economists that overall the global economy has recovered but somehow the unemployment in many countries is still high. According to the economic theory, when things are good, companies will invest more to grow their business and hire more people then unemployment should drop, but this has not happen.<\/p>\n

The issue is that theory may be valid in the past but no longer valid in today\u2019s technology economy. Many things have changed because with advance in technology, companies can increase efficiency and profits without having to hire people. According to the industry report, more companies are investing in technology instead of hiring people as factories can be automated with robots and office works are using more software to improve its effectiveness. The solution for today\u2019s unemployment situation is to quickly producing more technology workers as there is a shortage of them all over the world. As more companies are investing in technology, they need technology workers and there are not enough of them.<\/p>\n

The short term solution is to quickly re-train unemployed college graduates in technology areas to get them jobs. Since most of them already have a college education, a few months to a year of training in technology areas is possible and many countries are doing that. The UK, France, and Germany all have plans to retrain their college graduates in computer programming to solve the shortage of skilled IT people (These countries have to \u201cimport\u201d several thousand Indian programmers each year to meet demands). Of course the long term solution is to focus on develop more technology workers to meet the market needs by completely overhaul the education system to focus more on STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).<\/p>\n

To do that countries must invest in training more science and technology teachers as teachers are the key factor in developing skilled technology workers. It may take some time but it is better to start now, else it is too late. In this 21st century, the highest job growth is in STEM areas, by develop more STEM skilled workers, countries can solve the unemployment problem and grow their economy. Of course there is a notion among some graduates that they already have degrees and they can wait for better time when thing is better and need their skills. They do not understand the reality that better time may never come. With globalization, competition is getting fierce among countries as well as workers. If they need jobs they must go back and learn new skills that the market needs. They cannot stay home depending on their parents\u2019 support and wait for better economy.<\/p>\n

Today a company can produce many quality products in their fully automated and robotized factories at much lower prices. Basically company wants to have as few people as possible, let everything controlled by automated machinery and making as much money as possible. Currently the whole world is going through a wave of technological change and social problems caused by high unemployment. Technology is seen as the source of profitable growth and a driving force of globalization with huge potential opportunities among countries. At the same time, technology is also blamed for the destruction of jobs as fewer labor jobs are needed.<\/p>\n

If you look at all the big factory companies in the past fifty years, most of them are shrinking or filed for bankruptcy and 95% of growth is in technology companies. Not long ago, Exxon oil and General Motor were the largest companies in the world but today it is Apple, Google. It is clear that manufactory companies are on the declining and NOT hiring. At the same time, technology companies, big and small, are all hiring but could not find enough workers. The fact is that labor job growth does not follow economic growth as it used to in the time of the industrial age with manufacturing as the key driving force. Today economic growth is driven by technology NOT manufacturing. To solve unemployment and increase job availability, more attention needs to be focused to the development of technology workers, and technology startups since large manufacturing factories can no longer create jobs.<\/p>\n

Job growth is important for a prospering society, and it will take some efforts to make it happens but it all begins with an understanding that we are now living in a globalized world where technology is the key driver and the best investment is in technology education to produce more technology skilled workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
