Problem with team<\/p>\n

A person wrote to me: \u201cI worked as a software developer for six years and have completed training in project management. Recently I apply and get hired as a software project manager in a software company. The previous manager who left had mismanaged the project so I come into a bad project with an unorganized group of developers. One of the team members is angry towards me because he has worked for the company for 5 years and was expecting to be promoted into the project manager position. I have enough experience to solve technical problems but do not know how to solve the problem with the team since this is my first job as a project manager. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: It seems that you have a bad start as a new project manager as the previous manager already messed up. However this is also a new opportunity for you to demonstrate your leadership skills. As the new manager, you should call a meeting with the team but do not start to do anything yet. The first thing you need is to listen to the team\u2019s concerns. Let them express their opinions on the project; let them tell you what works well and what does not and allow them to make suggestions on where improvements might be made. A good leader is always a good listener first before taking any action.<\/p>\n

By understand that everybody on the team have opinions and encourage them to share with you then you have a clear picture of what has happened. You need to know the current situation first. Make note on their suggestions then add some of yours into an improvement plan. By demonstrate your skills as a collaborative manager, you will find it easier to present the plan back to them and get their supports. Because many ideas come from them so they would work with you instead of against you. Once you establish an agreement with the team, implement the improvement plan and watch to see how it works. Since the team feel it was their idea and you allow them to fix things, they should work hard for you. By monitoring the progress you can identify who are the most motivated member and possible become your future potential assistant.<\/p>\n

At this time, do not pay attention to the person who believes that he should have the job. If he is cooperating with you and supporting you than you gain a good assistant. If not, find someone else.
