The self-assessment technique<\/p>\n

A young teacher asked me: \u201cAs a new teacher, I want to know how effective my teaching is? How do I know whether my students are learning or not? Is there a technique that I can use to measure their learning and my teaching effectiveness? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer: To ensure that students are learning in your class, you need to let them know how relevant is your materials to their educational goals. Without learning goals, many students would go to class but their mind maybe somewhere and not learn much. At the beginning of the course, I ask students to write a half page statement that states their learning goals, expectations for the course, and a short description of how they are planning to achieve their goals. They must write the reason why they are taking this course, how does it fit their learning goals, and how much time they are willing to spend in this course.<\/p>\n

This technique will help students to think about how the course materials may be relevant to their learning goals. In the beginning, most students will state their goals as achieving a grade such as \u201cI want to get an \u201cA\u201d for this course\u201d and the reason for taking the course as \u201cIt is required by the school to get a degree.\u201d Of course, I want students to understand that there is much more to the course than just a grade and the course materials is more than just getting a requirement for the degree.<\/p>\n

Most first and second year students rarely think in terms of learning goals so having them to write something will force them think about their goals, even at that time most are not really commit to learn anything. After they all complete their statement, I discuss with them about learning goals that I have for them such as be able to do certain things or solve problems and by having those skills they will be able to do well when they are working in the industry. For example in my Big data course, my goals for them are: They should be able to set up and operate a \u201cHadoop\u201d cluster; write a \u201cMap Reduce\u201d programs; conduct basic statistical analysis on data etc. I also suggest that they add two or three soft-skills that they would learn in the course such as be able to write better, ask good questions, or give a presentation etc. as their goals in the course.<\/p>\n

By that time some students would change their goals as they can see what their learning goals should be. As they begin to understand their learning goals, I discuss the course materials in relation with what they can do and how it does fits their learning goals. When students realize that they can learn much more than achieve a grade, and the materials will help them perform well in their jobs, they are often motivated to learn more. I often start the class by saying: \u201cToday we will learn about this and by knowing this, you can do that.\u201d Then I explain how this material directly relates to students goals and how important it is to their future working life. At the end of each class, I ask them what progress they think they are making toward their learning goals. It often lead to some discussions about the materials can help them to achieve what they want to learn in the course.<\/p>\n

About half way in the course, I ask them to write another half page statement about what they have learned from the course. I want them to write a self-evaluation about how well they meet their personal goals for the course. I ask them: \u201cDo you think you deserve an \u201cA\u201d or a \u201cB\u201d grade or even lower grades? Why do you think you should get that grade as it compare with your actual performance (Their grades on quizzes and tests in the course) Although I do not collect the statement but by that time they already evaluate their own learning goals and compare it with their actual progress. The self-evaluation is a warning and reminder of their own learning and the surprising result is after that, even the laziest students begin to change their behavior and study more. The value of this task is encourage students to look at their own learning goals that they set for themselves and assesses how well they have reached them. If a goal has not been reached, they need to do something about it. Sometime I would ask them if they are starting the course from the beginning, would they set the same goals or would they spend more time to study.<\/p>\n

By allowing students to develop self-assessment skills by challenging them to make the course meaningful to them will allow most of them to adjust their behaviors and study more. In most of my classes, there is no surprise as students know what kind of grade they will get by the end as they all checking their progress based on their own evaluation. I believe every student should have their own learning goals where they should be able to articulate what they hope to achieve and check their own progress from their own learning experience. This is one of the key motivations that I often use with good result.<\/p>\n
