Letter to high school graduates<\/p>\n

Dear students,<\/p>\n

As you are graduating from High school, you are finishing one type of education but some of you will start another one: Your college education. You probably are excited but also worry about what will happen next? Would you be successful or not? Would you be able to build a good career that last a long time or be part of the unemployed graduates?<\/p>\n

For many years, I have talked to many students like you and gave them advices. I have found that there is not enough information about industry needs or technology trends provided to students for them to make decision about their career. However there are many misinformations about college education, degrees and fields of study. That is why I have written many articles in this blog to share with students about college education and the need to stay current with the global market trends. Of course, there are other advices from teachers and parents and I am sure many of you have heard about it.<\/p>\n

Last year, a young student told me that he was bored listening to his parents\u2019 advices as they do not understand him at all. I told him although his parents\u2019 advices may sound boring but if he listened carefully he will find that his parents were like him many years ago. Not long ago, they were also young, full of enthusiastic about life like him and they probably had the same feeling about their parents too. His parents probably found their parents\u2019 advices were boring as adults never understood their young so they did all kinds of things, both good and bad too. Then they had him and their lives suddenly changed as they had to be responsible for him. They had to work hard to raise him. They may struggle with all the difficulties in their world as they had to buy foods, clothes, paying for his education and other things that he needed. As they were concerned about his future, they gave him advices that he felt boring as they did not understand him. However, if he was calm, he will find that his parents had learned to overcome many obstacles throughout their lives to raise a family, and they knew more things than he knew because of their experiences. As they love him so much, they wanted the best for him and that was why they gave advices so he did not make mistakes in life.\u00a0 I did not know whether he understood me or not as it was not apparent at that time. I am sure some of you would rather be left alone to do whatever you like rather than listen to your parents or reading my advices. Just like your parents, I do care about you as we worry that you may make \u201cserious mistakes\u201d that will affect your entire lives. We know that everybody will make mistakes and learn from them but we hope that you will not make \u201cserious mistakes\u201d that you will regret later.<\/p>\n

Like your parents, I also give advice but from the position of someone who have been working in the industry for many years and also a professor who understand the education system well. I want ALL students to succeed in life, to be responsible for their own career, for their family, and for their society. That is why I write this blog as a way to share my thought with you. I do not expect you to will agree with me but if it provides you some useful information that help you to set a clear direction in life or in your career than I would be happy.<\/p>\n

Traditional education focuses on getting a degree. A degree is a guarantee of certain knowledge that people who have degree could do something, mostly being officers for the emperor. That worked well in the past but no longer today. A degree does not guarantee anything because there are people who had degree but no knowledge or skills and they cannot do much. Therefore today it is the actual knowledge and skills that will help you to get what you want. Currently most companies will assess your skills before hiring you so DO NOT rely on a degree but you must rely on your own skills. That means you must study hard, make sure you learn everything well and focus on develop the skills needed. When you have knowledge and skills, a degree is only a \u201cby-product\u201d that comes with it. Do NOT focus too much on a piece of paper, but concentrate on getting the needed skills. The challenge today is that technology changes fast, and keeps changing faster. The skills you learned in school today may not be the ones you will need in the future. You must continue to learn new things all the time to get the skills that match the needs of the job market.<\/p>\n

In college, you will learn many things, including failure. DO NOT be afraid to fail as \u201cFailure is the mother of succeed\u201d as you will learn from your mistake. If you are not willing to learn from your own mistakes, you will never reach your full potential. When I was a student, I made many mistakes, I skipped classes to went out with friends, I learned to memorized \u201cCheat sheets\u201d to pass exams and I did failed some classes but I learned from these mistakes and it made me a better student. I did not do well in the \u201cDifferential Equations\u201d class where I got a \u201cD\u201d grade. I was completely devastated because I did not have prepared for it. I retook the class and worked very hard and even today, I still remember what I have learned in that class. My teacher told me: \u201cMaking mistake is fine as long as you only make it once. I rather have you make mistake in school and in my class rather than making mistake later in life.\u201d I love that advice and often use the same phrase to my current students.<\/p>\n

Many college students are motivated by grades. If they have an \u201cA\u201d that means they are better than students who had a \u201cB\u201d but it is a mistake because higher grades DOES NOT means anything if you do not remember what you have learned. I understand that many of you like to show parents your good grades in order for them to be happy and proud. But let us be realistic, you do NOT go to college for grades, you go to college to learn, to think, to develop the ability to reason, to develop the skills, to organize facts and ideas into something useful that you can apply on your own. You must develop the ability to think beyond what is in textbooks, or in academic theories. You must be able to \u201cconnect all the dots\u201d as Steve Jobs often said and come up with your own view about the world around you. Having your own ideas and know how to apply your knowledge is the ultimate goal of education. In my college year, my friend and I took the same four courses and he had \u201cA\u201d in all four but I did not and it took me a long time to overcome that bad feeling. I was jealous and upset for not getting that good grades and I have tried and tried for three years but he was always ahead. He completed the first three years of college with the top grades of \u201cA\u201d in all courses when I did not until the last year in college. When I finally got \u201cA\u201d in all the courses, I did not feel anything as the competitive nature and desires about grades were gone. I did not care too much for the grades anymore as I have learned about the knowledge and skills that I have acquired and they are much more important than a \u201cPerfect A\u201d.\u00a0 The world is full of bright people with good grades but failed because the only thing they were good at was at school, and after they graduated with perfect grades, they failed in real life.<\/p>\n

Young people always are passionate about something. Be it music, arts, literatures, sports, and other things as these are the \u201cspices of life\u201d, it enriches you and make you happy so besides studying, you need to find something to enjoy too. When I was young, my family was poor and the only thing I can get is books from the library so books are the best thing. I read all kinds of book, anything that I can get but when I grew up I began to select certain types of book to read as my interest changed. When I went to study in the U.S. the library had many books and I had so many opportunities to learn more from books as I spend most of my time in the library. Even today I often read several books each month. If you do not have something to enrich your life, such as music, books, arts etc. you may miss a lot in life. Find something that you really passionate about and make a habit to enjoy it.<\/p>\n

As college students, you will meet many people, some are good and some are not, some are more mature and some are not. However, you must be careful in choosing friends by finding someone who share the same interests with you. Friends have much influence over you that you do not even know so be carefully about whom you want to associate with. Friendship should be something that last for many years NOT something you only know for a short period of time. A good friend is someone that you can depend on when you need encouragement or someone who can help you to overcome obstacles. You need someone who can listen to your problems and provide good advices. A good friend is someone who will put your welfare above their own as they care for you and willing to help you.<\/p>\n

As students, you probably read books, novels, see romanced movies about the good time in college where students enjoy \u201cthe best years of their life\u201d and you like to do that too. DO NOT make that mistake as they are nothing but fictions. You go to college to get educated, to learn, and to mature to be a responsible person. You go to college to study, to do homework, to take exams NOT to enjoy life irresponsible as some movies had suggested. College is NOT high school as you are growing to be an adult with responsibilities. DO NOT fell into the notion that \u201cLife is short and you must enjoy it when you are young\u201d those are ideas for movies or romances but they are NOT true. You will have plenty of time and the whole life to enjoy after complete school. You may feel uncomfortable, desperate and somehow lonely now but at this age, it is normal as everyone also feel that way and you are not the only one. Every student will have that kind of feeling sometime but you learn to overcome it as well as any temptation that distract you from your education goals. Do not hurry into things that you may regret later because everything should wait until you are ready. Being an adult means being responsible for all your actions and it takes time to develop as part of growing up. Particularly you will find someone who share the same value with you, who care for you and love you.<\/p>\n

As students, you have many things to learn so please take time to learn them well. You have the knowledge, the skills and the motivation to succeed but you also need to understand that your education is NOT about just getting a job, or making money but much more. You have to learn about gratitude by giving back of what you owned to your parents, to your teachers, to your friends, to your society, and to your country. You must use your skills to contribute to your society by being a good and responsible person and good citizen to your country. You must learn to do something useful with your lives and make a difference in other peoples\u2019 lives. You go to college to get educated and also to develop your character and personality to become good person, good citizen by leading a fulfilling life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
