Planning your future<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cThere are many unemployed graduates in my country, are there certain fields of study that guarantee that graduates will have job? Many of us are worrying about our future and our parents are concerned too. We need your advice as we do not know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer: If you have read my blog, you probably know that it is up to you to investigate the fields of study before making decision. I have written many articles about how to select school and field of study already. Please read them carefully. Basically, NO school can guarantee that their graduates will have job, it is the knowledge and skills of graduates that determine whether they will have job or not. NO field of study can guarantee that their graduates will have job, but there are certain skill demands in the industry that students must select to get better chance of getting job. NO degree can guarantee that their graduates will have job, degree only certifies that students have completed a number of required courses, but it is how much students have learned and their skills that will get them job. Today students and their families must plan carefully before entering college by investigate school, fields of study, job market to make sure that they will achieve their education goals.<\/p>\n

To start, you must have a \u201cpersonal vision\u201d of what you want to do with your life and how you will achieve it. The personal vision is an idea or an image on what you would like to be, it is a guidelines for what kind of life that you want, in both career and personal life. A personal vision is an image that you create for yourself about who you are. You must be honest to yourself because it must come from your own consciousness, not what others say about you. The image will reflect your desires about your direction in life, your activities, expertise, and other factors such as family, friendships, time, possessions etc. After you have created your own personal vision, you can develop your career plan that help you to make your personal vision become a reality.<\/p>\n

You can start by answering questions about yourself such as \u201cWhat will be my major accomplishments (at age 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70)? Who will be important to me (at age 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70)? Why these people are important to me? What will I like to do (at age 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70)? What kind of things I want to do in my life? By answering these questions, you will define your own ideas about your envisioned future. By clearly defining what are the most important achievements, persons, or other things in your life, you can set goals of what you want to study, who you want to be so you can make better decisions.<\/p>\n

The personal vision is a roadmap that keeps you stay focus on your long-term goals. It enables you to define and maintain your personal direction, so you will not get lost in this confusing world. Students often tell me that a personal vision is difficult, and even unrealistic but I tell them that if they do not take time to know more about themselves, about their goals and dreams, about their beliefs and attitudes, and their future life then they could be lost, moving from one thing to another, or being led by someone else who tell them what to do.<\/p>\n

Of course, life is not simple as things are subject to change but having a personal vision will keep you to stay as close as you wish and not get distracted by others. Today there are many things that can impact your life such as changes in the job market, economy, globalization competition, family, and certain unpredictable events. All of these can distract you from achieving your goals that is why having a personal vision will prepare you for whatever happen both positively and negatively. To do that you will need to understand your own interests and values, basically you must know yourself first to stay calm in the chaotic situation of this fast changing world.<\/p>\n

By knowing yourself, you can plan for your career. You must remember that a career begins in school NOT when you get a job. That means you must know what you want to do and what kind of knowledge and skills that you need to acquire. Career planning requires investigation into the job market, the field of study as well as your passion, your strengths and weaknesses. There are books and novels telling you to enjoy your college life when you are young because it is the best time of your life, but actually these people lie. Please do NOT believe these romantic fictions or suggestions. Being a college students means going to classes, doing homework, study hard, having up and down with personal relationship, and a few brief moments of fun with friends. However college life is where you learn to be an adult with responsibilities. You must understand that there are consequences of everything that you do so you must be conscious of your activities. You are going to college to be educated, to study, to acquire the needed knowledge and skills so you can be a responsible person to yourself, to your family, and to your society. If you do not agree with me and you actually just want to enjoy your college life without being responsible then it means that you will have a very short \u201cfun time\u201d. For those of you that take my advices seriously, things will get better as you are learning to be an adult with responsibilities. If you study hard by develop a good knowledge and skills, you will do well in your career and getting a good job of your choice.<\/p>\n

Of course it does not end there as you must continue to learn and grow on the job; a career is a life-long effort. You must seek advice from managers, parents, and friends but keep control of your career based on your personal vision.
