As companies are successful in one business, they are expanding into others using their large capitals, well-known brands, and management expertise. Amazon started out as an online bookstore but now it becomes the largest online store in the world, selling almost everything including cloud computing services. Google started out as a search engine company but now it becomes the largest software company that selling all types of software but Google does not stop there as it is getting into self-driving cars too.\u00a0 Last week, it announced the \u201cGoogle car\u201d which excited many people about the cars of the future that riders can tell it where they want to go and it will drive them there. Alibaba the largest online retail store in China also announced that it will be opening its store in the U.S market to compete with Amazon; and Huawei also wanted to sell its smartphone in the U.S and Europe market to compete with Apple and Samsung. A Wall Street analyst wrote: \u201cAs many large companies are expanding all over the world, most small and medium sized companies will not survive as their owners and managers do not know how to compete or prepare for this type of competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past business goal is to increase profit but today the key goal is to grow and expanding into global market. An executive explains: \u201cYou can have a good profit in local market but when competitors move in, especially if they are large global companies, you may not survive. Today if your company cannot expand and grow, you will not be profitable for long as competition is fierce and happening at global scale. Today company owners and managers must understand the global market as well as technology to manage a company. That is why they all need to be re-trained to think differently from what they have known. With globalization, everything changes. Small and medium sized companies will not be able to compete in the global market as only large companies can; and to manage this type of company, it is important that all managers must be re-trained.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past, management is trained as \u201cBusiness Management\u201d with costs, revenue, profits but today it is NOT enough. The new management must also be about \u201cTechnology Management\u201d with certain technology knowledge and skills to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Today organization structure must be transparent so workers know how everything is organized and someone in each level in the organization must have the authority to make the final decision. It should not be percolated up to a few people on top as the traditional bureaucracy where managers refuse to make decision and wait for direction from the top. In this fast changing world, somebody has to be clearly in command to keep thing moving accordingly.<\/p>\n

In the past, there is only one right way, one right direction to manage people and they all come from the top. Today, different workers need to be managed differently, as manager do not \u201cmanage\u201d people anymore but they must \u201clead\u201d them by acting as the role model. That means they must have the knowledge and skills to do the work first and set example to others, the goal is to make productive the key goals of each individual. Today managers should not sit behind a desk and give orders to workers but they must do all the works that means it depends on what type of work that the managers will be selected accordingly. Factory managers must come from the factory workers, a software managers must come from software developers etc. The reason is without proper knowledge and skills; they cannot manage effectively and \u201clead\u201d by example.<\/p>\n

In this globalized world, managers must have more than just local business knowledge but they must understand the global market, global trends, and technology trends to formulate a company strategy. By helping companies consider new realities, such as globalization, employment, shifts in the distribution of works to lower cost countries, and increasing global competitiveness.
