A young teacher asked me: \u201cWhat should I do when the class is out of control? How do I control the class when students are distracted? Please advice.<\/p>\n

Answer: Losing control of the classroom is the most frustrating experience for any teacher when students are distracted by an event or when there is a lack of interest in the lecture. Regardless of the causes, it is important to regain control of the class as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

When I find some students are having conversation and not pay attention to the lecture. I would stop the lecture to get the class attention and look at the students who are having conversation. Usually they would stop and I could gain control of the class. It would be best to not saying anything afterward as it is only a small nuisance that often happen in every class.<\/p>\n

When a student misbehave, I would stop the lecture and look at the disruptive student to get the attention. Usually the student would stop. If needed, I would joke with the class in a humorous tone that I have a prediction that maybe someone will have to repeat the same class next year. In that case, the class may laugh and the misbehave student may be embarrassed then everything is back to normal. This is not a threat if you are using humor but the disruptive student does get the message. In this situation, one warning is good enough.<\/p>\n

Many disruptive problems probably have nothing to do with the teacher so do not take it personally. They often represent the active spirit of young people who cannot sit still for a long time or they are frustrated with something else. As teacher, you may want to talk to the disruptive students after class about their behavior. I do not think they will continue to disrupt the class when you have taken an interest in them. By understand their frustration and help them to overcome, you can get more respect that way. Avoid confronting them in front of the class as it makes the situation more difficult to solve. I find a nice gesture, a humor or a joke usually get better results than a threat or an angry yelling.<\/p>\n

By master some techniques and remain calm, you will find that managing the class is easier than you think. As you gain more confident in your ability to manage the class, students will learn more and classroom quickly become more pleasant place to teach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
