The need for technology education<\/p>\n

As U.S. high school students are graduating this month, several top executives have a message for them: \u201cPlease go to college and study Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) then graduate and work for us.\u201d According to the industry, the most important skills the industry really needs now is Information Technology (IT) as there is a critical shortage of these workers all over the world, and without them, companies cannot grow and economy cannot be improved. Last month, executives from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Apple were asking government to invest in computer training in all public schools, from kindergarten to high school.<\/p>\n

A concerned friend asked me: \u201cDoes that mean every student must learn to write code?\u201d I told him: \u201cNo, coding is not necessary but every student must learn how to use computer. Today computer is as necessary just like paper and pen in school. Since technology impacts everything, some basic knowledge and skills in computer are necessary. Students must understand how technology works, how it impacts their life, and how to use it. Not long ago, elementary students must learn how to read, write and basic arithmetic, now they also need to know how to use a computer because technology is changing the way they learn and work. To prepare students for the 21st century, school should teach basic computer skills such as how to use word processing, navigate the Internet etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is still confused: \u201cThe important fields are Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) but why do you keep mention about computer?\u201d I told him: \u201cAlmost everything in STEM is driven by computer technology so knowing how to use a computer is the most basic skill, just like read and write. Without computer skills, you will not go far in STEM. Research shows that students are six times more likely to study STEM in university if they have computer skills when they are younger. To give students some basic skills in computer are the first step in encourage them to study STEM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, all over the world there are millions of technology jobs go unfilled. It is predicted that in the next ten years, there will be 4.5 million new technology jobs created but only less than 2 million college graduates in these fields which means over 2 million more jobs go unfilled. Any country who can take over these jobs will have over $500 billion dollars add to their economy and that is why currently there is a race among nations to push technology training in their schools.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
