The Cloud Computing Trends<\/p>\n

Cloud computing is a new way of using Information Technology (IT) where everything is provided by an outside vendor where companies renting instead of buying hardware and software and pay only for what they use.\u00a0 Basically, Cloud computing can help reduce upfront costs, IT investment, but it also results in the \u201cstandardization\u201d of software and hardware. This is a bad news for IT outsourcing industry overall, but it will impact India and China significantly.<\/p>\n

For over twenty years, Indian IT outsourcing industry has been successful in providing IT services worldwide. The industry has grown rapidly, starting from $100 million revenue earned in 1990s to over $104 billion revenue in 2013 and several million jobs for India\u2019s economy. In the past few years, China outsourcing industry also grow quickly into $45 Billion dollars business in 2013 with million new jobs created. The outsourcing business is based mostly on software development as each company has their own software \u201ccustomized\u201d to their needs. But with \u201cstandardization\u201d and Cloud computing, most companies will no longer develop software on their own so they do not need to outsource anymore.<\/p>\n

The shift to Cloud computing will eventually affect the entire global outsourcing industry. Currently outsourcing companies get contracts from customers that outsource their software development to reduce costs. With Cloud computing, those customers so not develop their own software anymore and outsourcing would eventually disappear. Since most customers will \u201cRent\u201d software from few large software-as-services providers such as Google, Microsoft and Amazons as these companies are expanding their businesses to become software services companies. With Cloud computing, many things will be standardized and there will be less customization of software. This would mean that there is fewer type of work available for outsourcing software companies anymore.<\/p>\n

Today major IT companies such as Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Intel, Amazon, and HP have recognized the potential business of Cloud computing and they have already make changes to get into this business. An executive explains: \u201cWe outsource over $300 billion dollars per year but with Cloud computing we can keep this business in our country. That means more jobs, more profits, and better for our economy. In the next few years, there will be big change in the IT industry and fast grow because things will explode here instead of going somewhere.\u201d Today two largest IT companies, Google and Amazon already prosper in this new business. They already operate huge data centers hosting all types of applications for U.S customers. Other companies such as Intel, Cisco, HP, Dell, EMC are quickly following with better prices and supports in cloud computing. Cisco has already started a new business area building a huge platform that combines networks, storage and computing.\u00a0 Intel is focusing on building multiple-core processor chips that offer scalable performance and offers efficient utilization of power. The efficient power consumption is key factors in cloud computing datacenters. Microsoft has an aggressively focus on open source platform data centers to capture more customers.<\/p>\n

India outsourcing companies such as Infosys, TCS, Mahindra and Wipro are quickly developing strategies for cloud computing too but it would be difficult for them to compete with U.S. companies as there is no reason for customers to have their cloud computing services in another country, if the cost is the same. Therefore India\u2019s strategy is to focusing more in developing countries in Asia and Africa where their infrastructure is still weak or underdeveloped to quickly capture the market. They must move quickly before local companies in those countries can start to get into cloud computing services. This is not an easy task as many governments of those developing countries have recognized this potential market and will try to prevent such move from foreign companies. An African leader explains: \u201cThere is no way we allow such foreign companies to get in and capture the market that we can do for ourselves. We need to keep IT jobs in our own country for our own people.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the IT business trends are evolving from \u201crenting\u201d instead of \u201cbuying\u201d it would be easier for local companies to quickly capture this market and small local startups to create new applications, new solutions as they do not need to invest in IT infrastructure. It may open up more opportunities for innovations and opportunities for local companies and developing countries to grow more jobs by keeping things at home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
