Starting a company<\/p>\n

A computer Science student wrote to me: \u201cI will be graduating next month and want to start my own company with several friends. I have read your blog about entrepreneurship and like it very much. My question is when would be the right time to start a company since currently the local economy is weak and many startups failed. Should I wait for the right time? Do you have any suggestions for a group of graduates who want to start a technology company? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: There are always opportunities whenever you are ready. Since the economy is weak, it is the best time to start your own company because you have fewer competitors. If you start now when the local economy recovers, you are already established and ready to expand. (i.e., Apple started during the economic recession of 1978; Google started during the weak economy of 1996.).<\/p>\n

One area that offers potential opportunity is information technology training. With office automation, both government and private companies need to apply information technology to improve efficiency and they need to train office workers to use technology. Traditional training is limited to class size and cannot scale up quickly. You can disrupt that business with on-line trainings to train a lot of people at lower prices. As long as you can provide quality and effective training you will succeed. You could look at the example of the Massively Online Open Courses (MOOCs) that is available on the Internet, most classes are taught in English but if you can do something similar in your own language then you have good business. If your startup can focus on the online education and training market and build your business similar to MOOCs, I think you will do well. Last year when I was in China, I saw several Chinese startups following MOOCs examples by providing classes in their languages with millions of students, but instead of providing it without charge, they charged money to access to their courses. The price varies from $10 to $25 dollars per course, and they seemed to do very well.<\/p>\n

Of course, the key issue of education and training is the quality of training. As long as your course is well designed with high quality than you can succeed since there are many people who need to learn about information technology to keep their jobs. Today, with Cloud computing, your start-ups can take advantage of this service by putting all your class content on the Cloud and manage access to it. You key values are: Providing training service in a timely fashion that meets market demands and getting it to a lot of people at reasonable price.<\/p>\n

The next opportunity that you may want to focus on is healthcare. There is huge need for effective healthcare services in rural areas where travel to hospitals or visit doctors is difficult. If you could provide solutions such as telemedicine by allowing patients to talk to doctors via the video-interface of their smartphone or personal computer (See my blog on health technology in Africa), where you could charge a small amount when people use this service (Either patients pay or doctor pay your company for this service). These can prove to be a cost-effective answer to several challenges in healthcare where instead of travel long distance and wait for a long time to see a doctor, patients who live in remote areas can talk to doctor at certain time without have to travel. There are other applications that you can develop for mobile phones to provide healthcare services such as tele-diagnostics, electronic health records, patient monitoring etc. and these are good opportunities to look into. By focus on these emerging opportunities in a quick and timely fashion, your startups can stay ahead in this competitive market and expand as more opportunities come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
