Selecting university<\/p>\n

Selecting what to study in college or which university to attend is not as easy as you think and it may take more time than you expected. Even you already know, there are factors that you should consider before making final decision. To most high school graduates, selecting an university to attend is probably one of the most difficult decisions you have ever made. There are state universities, private universities, for-profit universities, and on-line universities – so many choices, it can be confusing and easy to make mistake. I have asked current graduates what they wished they knew before selecting an university. They told me that at that time, their decision is mostly based on the schools\u2019 location, training cost, training programs available, and school\u2019s reputation. However, now they wish that they have asked the following questions: \u201cWill this university prepare me for a good job in this competitive market? Will this university have the most up to date training programs? Will this university have the qualified faculties who can give me the best education training? Will this university has strong relationship with industry that can help me to get a good job?\u201d<\/p>\n

Today with the high unemployment among college graduates, these are key questions that students must ask to base their decision on. Selecting the right universities that can help students to achieve their education\u2019s goals is very important. Selecting the wrong schools, wrong programs could cost a lot of money, time, and even your career. Several years ago when working in the industry, I rejected a number of job applicants and one of them was my friend\u2019s son. He called me and complained: \u201cMy son apply for a job in your company. He did not even get an interview but get rejected immediately. Can you explain this?\u201d I was surprised so I told him that I would look into it. After few days, I called him and explained: \u201cYour son attended a non-accredited university so his degree is not valid.\u201d He was shock: \u201cHow could it be? That university advertised all over the places and it is very expensive.\u201d Of course, there are a lot of universities like that, they open strictly to make money, it is easy to get in as long as you can pay, but the their training programs are weak and their faculties are not qualified. Students and families must careful of such schools and try to avoid being victims of these scams.<\/p>\n

Selecting university requires investigations about the legitimate of the school, the training programs, and the best way is to visit the schools and talk to current students as well as graduates. I have written several articles about selecting school and training programs and in my opinion, the best way to determine which school to attend is visit the school and talk to students. Every school have \u201corganized tour\u201d where they provide information to prospective students and their families but before attending such event, students should do their own investigation by talking to students who are studying there as well as graduates from the training program that you want to attend. That will give you valuable insight into how good is the school, its training program and the qualification of the faculty.
