The last day of class<\/p>\n

It was the last day of class as students are graduating and next week they will be standing in line in the graduation ceremony. To all students it was a special day but to me, it was also a day full of emotion. I have worked with these students for four years, I watched them when they entered the program, I saw their confusion, struggling then I watched them as they matured, full of confidence and ready to face challenges of the real world. As I congratulated them on their achievements, students asked me to give them advices. I often give advices in classes and in my blog so it would be redundant but as they insisted, I began to speak:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this fast changing world, the only \u201cguarantee\u201d you can get is by continue to learn and keep your skills up to date. Getting a job is only the beginning as you must keep your job and grow it into a full professional career that you can enjoy for a long time. To do that you must make yourself valuable to your company. Many graduates assume that they will be fine if they work hard. But working hard is NOT enough as there are always competitors and other options available to your company. You need to keep your job by improving your skills continually as technology changes and you must change with it. You must develop certain skills that are not taught in college, skills that only come with experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKeeping a job is one thing but advancing your career is another thing. You cannot write code forever; you cannot do the same thing forever as you must change with progress. You can increase your value to the company by expanding your knowledge and skills so you can grow in your position. You may start as software developers or testers but you must learn how to work closely with users and customers. You must become a connector between customers and your company, you must understand customers\u2019 needs and help your company to meet that needs. In that case, you can move to become a project manager. You will learn how manage your project to be successful. There are many things to learn in managing software projects but if you are doing well, it is not difficult to move into program or product manager where you will manage several projects or a key product of the company. In this leadership position, you will learn more about the business where you build connections and develop a solid professional reputation. As long as you are willing to learn, you will do well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, there will be obstacles, setbacks, challenges and things will be more difficult than you thought but the key to success is perseverance. You have to put in the efforts and learn from your mistakes, there is no other way better than to learn from mistakes. A best way to be more successful is to stop comparing yourself to other people, for there is always someone better or worse than you. The key thing is to continue to learn and to improve as it is the only thing that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many career paths that you can choose. The safest is to work for big company where you work hard, get promote and moving up with time in your career. This path was followed by people who rely on process and rules to grow their career and it work well in stable work environment. But it is only one of many choices that some of you will select. There are others if you dare to be different. You can choose another path by working for startup companies which are full of uncertainty and excitement. And while it is risky, you may get different rewards. Without this entrepreneurship spirit, Bill Gates may be a lawyer in a law firm, just like his father. Steve Jobs may be an assembler working for an electronic company; and Mark Zuckerberg may be a programmer for a software company. However they chose the other path and change the world. You need to know that you have the power of choice at every moment too: choice in what you do for your career, choice to select who your friends are, and choice to select your own path. Be conscious, keep all options open as they are your life and your career. However, no matter what you do you must understand that every choice has consequence and you must accept your responsibilities inherent in every decision and the choice you make so you must act carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should begin with the end in mind: Who do you want to be? What thing do you want to offer to the world, to you friends, to your family and to your society? There are many definitions of \u201csuccess\u201d and it is you who create that definition of what it should be. Enjoy your achievement and keep learning as life is the best school that you can learn. Be humble in this fast changing world as it is the real possession that you can keep.\u201d<\/p>\n
