Learning on the new job<\/p>\n

A new graduate wrote to me: \u201cI just graduate and get offered a job in a software company. I would like to be productive as soon as possible but the company gives me a lot of books to read and I am very frustrated. What can I do? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: No one could start a new job and be productive immediately, including people with a lot of experience. Every company has its own processes and different ways to do thing and it takes time to learn. As newly graduate, I would expect that you may not be able to be productive for at least three to five months. Anyone who expects more would be disappointed. Anyone who starts a new job will experience some stresses and frustrations and it is normal. Of course, you do not want to stay idle for few months in your first job so my advice is to talk to your manager and be pro-active in learning on how the company operates as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

The best thing is to spend some time with people on your team so you would feel comfortable as being part of the team. Nothing worse than sit in your desk with a lot of materials to read when people around you are busy doing thing. Ask your manager to assign you a mentor, someone who will allow you to watch them work so you can get some idea how the company operates. You should participate in team meetings where you can listen to people discuss, solve problems and see how the group operates to build relationship with people in the group. As a new person, you should listen more than talk; you do not know everything yet so be humble. You may ask questions to clarify things that you do not understand as this is also a learning process for you to learn more about the work environment.<\/p>\n

You need to know who your team members are as well as their roles and responsibilities. By knowing that, you can ask the right questions to the right persons to ensure that you understand your work and their expectations of you. It does not take long for pro-active person like you to be familiar with the work and have good idea about what they want you to do.
