When I mentioned it, my mother shook her head and said: “That field is NOT for girl, select something else!” My younger brother laughed out loud: “She wants to study computer. She is a geek!” Although my father did not say anything but he probably thought that his daughter was crazy. We were immigrants from China and only settled in the U.S for less than 10 years so my parents were still “old fashion” and believe that women must stay home, get married, and raised children. If go to college they should follow the traditional women careers such as being teachers, nurses, or secretaries. Study Computer Science was definitely NOT in their mind. But I am determined to follow my dream to be a software developer.”

“Since I had good grades in high school and did well on the SAT test, it was not difficult to get accepted to several top universities. I chose Carnegie Mellon as it ranked as one of the best schools in Computer Science and I wanted the best for myself. My class had 65 students and I was one of three women. Working with so few women was a disadvantage as we did not have many to study with. Computer science was mostly male-oriented, and most people tended to work together in team of four or five. It was rare to have a mixed group of men and women so it was difficult for most women in this type of teamwork but I determined to succeed and change the image of women in this field.”

“CMU’s computer courses were more difficult than I thought, the learning environment was highly competitive but I liked challenging works. There was a belief that girls cannot do science or math but I proved that was wrong as I did well in all math courses, better than most. I was one of the top students in programming languages, data structures, software process and quality, and project management. Although I struggled with software architecture and information retrieval course a little but overall, I was still one of the top students in the program. Beside technical courses, I also took several business classes to learn how companies are using information technology, how they operate and how technology can increase their effectiveness and efficiency.”

“In my third year, I had internship at Google. My first assignment was to build a language extraction function for a larger search engine project. I like the work so much that I completed it in few weeks and surprised the project manager. He asked me to develop complex algorithms for the multimedia web mining project. This was a challenging work with a lot of complex mathematics. Since I loved math, I had no problem and did it so well that surprised the entire project team. The project manager recognized my ability and offered me a full time position. Among my class, I was the only student who had a job offer one year before graduation. The best part was that I received very high salary, excellent sign-in bonus, and stock options worth over $50,000 dollars. That shock my parents and afterward they changed their attitude about the role of women in science and technology. By having a job at top software company, I also received a lot of respect from my classmates.”

“Although it is difficult as a women studying computer in college, in the work place it is an issue too. Even though you have your computer science degree, you are still a woman in the world of men. However it is a challenge that I wanted to overcome so I worked closely with all the men in our team. Overtime, many would seek my advices on technical issues because I am very good with math and algorithms. One day I heard they said: “She is the best people in our team, we are so fortunate to have her.” And another comment: “She came from Carnegie Mellon that is why she is so good.” That made me proud of what I have accomplished and about the reputation of my school.”

“Looking back to the past five years I have one question for women: “What difference does it make if women do not study science or technology?” In my opinion, it could be a huge loss for women regardless where they live. All over the world, only few women are studying science or technology and they miss some of the best jobs available today. The information technology industry is creating more jobs than universities are producing technology graduates. Based on a global study, the world will graduate about 1.7 million technology people between 2010 and 2020, a decade during which 4.5 million technology jobs will open up, leaving a gap of about 2.8 million unfilled computing jobs and these 2.8 million jobs would pay over $1.2 trillion dollars in wages and that is a lot of money for any economy. Given that women only make up not even one-fifth of science and technology graduates, why are we not picking up the slack? Why not begin to encourage women to pursue these lucrative and plentiful jobs as programmers, developers, systems analysts, and information systems managers? Why women do not want to be part of something that is so important in the future?”

“When women are not participated in science and technology field, they miss out on lucrative technical careers. Today the highest paying jobs for women are in software, an industry in which only about one-tenth of workers are women. The best jobs for women are computer programmer, software developer, information systems manager and systems analyst, with median pay ranging from about $85,000 to $120,000. Contrast that with the teaching profession, where more than three-quarters of school teachers are women with median pay is approximately $42,000 in elementary schools and about $53,000 in high schools. Contrast that with nursing profession, where 95 percent of nurses are women and their median pay is approximately $56,000. I do not want to mention secretary or receptionist positions where about 99 percent are women and the pay is much lower.”

“Technology jobs offer higher pay than any others but the advantages are more than that. Today technology is impacting everything and you can apply your skills in almost anything that you like to do. If you do not want to work in software industry, you can work for finance and banking industry, they need computer workers. Healthcare industry and hospitals need computer workers too. By NOT studying technology in college, women are missing out opportunities to have high salaries, stock-options, being independent, and flexibility that these careers offer. Although some people still believe that science and technology are NOT for women, I can prove that they are completely wrong because technology got me where I am today.”

“To women who are still undecided, I want to say: “Why hesitate, take your first step toward technical career then you will have a wonderful journey ahead and you can make a difference in this world. To women who are already study technology, my advice is to stay with it. It is challenging, it is hard, but there are other people that have done it and they are doing very well. In this “knowledge age”, everything is opening up to women so seize the opportunity and be brave because you are paving the way for the next generation and together we will change the world.”

Kathy Chang là một trong những sinh viên của tôi đã tốt nghiệp năm năm trước và hiện thời đang làm việc tại Google, cô …

[31

post-4249","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cac-van-de-khac
["GET
