The crisis in Europe<\/p>\n

Last month European unemployment reached 11.8%, as millions of people continued to suffer the effects of a global recession that may last at least few more years. Data from 17 Western European countries rose to 18.7 million unemployed people in November 2012 but if you look closer, the picture was much worst with 38% of college graduates could not find jobs. Many of them have been unemployed for several years. An analyst called this phenomenon \u201cThe unemployed generation\u201d where for many years; the number of unemployed graduates kept accumulated with a lot of them completely gave up the search for job. If you look at the data from Greece, Portugal and Spain, the number unemployed college graduates is 48% and can be much higher for graduates who are working in jobs that have nothing to do with their education.<\/p>\n

Last year when I was in Spain, I met so many college graduates working in restaurants, hotels, or selling souvenirs for tourists etc. One told me that he has a MS degree in Psychology and spent three years looking for work until he found a taxi driving job. He said: \u201cThere is no future here; the industry is dying as jobs are moving elsewhere and governments cannot do anything because they are fighting with each other rather than working toward solution. We all under a European Union (EU) bailout program but we do not know how long it will last. Governments are laying off a lot of people in order to receive rescue funding from the EU. Many banks closed and went out of business; many businesses filed for bankruptcy, many retail stores closed; and many rich people are moving out of the country. The problem is getting worst as unemployment depressed consumer confidence so no one wants to buy anything and every family is increasingly concerned about their financial situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Germany and France are feeling the pressure. My friends in Germany told me that everyone there is tightening their spending. No one wants to buy anything and as business is slowing down, many businesses are beginning to lay off workers, adding to the high unemployment. As the economy begins to decline, governments are cutting spending and the whole Euro-zone economy is contracting and could get into a big crisis. Of course, there are many politicians as well as economists who try to explain the causes; and newspapers are full of commentaries and blames but few people mention that even in this high unemployment and recession, there are many jobs available but cannot be filled as they are mostly technology jobs.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, technology has raised incomes for workers as well as adds wealth to the economy. During the industrial age, most factory workers make much more than farmers but this time technologies are replacing \u201cunskilled workers\u201d at faster pace that people and governments could not catch up. For example, word processors are replacing typists; spreadsheets are replacing secretaries and office workers. Email can make post office obsolete; Internet connects all businesses and people together; online stores are replacing physical stores; ATM machine at Banks are replacing Bank Tellers; Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems integrate offices system, marketing system, manufacturing system, and everything within the company into one system. Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems set up logistics, monitor and control all raw materials and components that company needs. Robots are replacing labor workers in factories etc. Most of these Information Technology systems are being created in the past fifty years and keep getting better with time. Since their prices are getting lower more businesses are using them and replacing people with technology.<\/p>\n

People with technology skills are benefiting from these technologies as they see their salaries going up but the labor jobs for \u201cunskilled workers\u201d (People without technology skills) are disappearing quickly. That is why there are so many unemployed people everywhere. Without government\u2019s vision and strategy, young people do not have clear direction of what to do and what to study as job market is changing so fast. The question is what to do? For individuals, this is a key warning to develop technology skills as quickly as possible. To do that, the education system must change but education is often the last to change and that probably explain the current situation in many European countries.
