Ng\u00e0y nay CNTT kh\u00f4ng c\u00f2n l\u00e0 xa hoa m\u00e0 l\u00e0 s\u1ef1 c\u1ea7n thi\u1ebft trong cu\u1ed9c s\u1ed1ng c\u1ee7a ch\u00fang ta, s\u1ed1 l\u01b0\u1ee3ng vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m \u0111ang t\u0103ng l\u00ean nhanh ch\u00f3ng v\u00e0 c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 g\u1ea5p \u0111\u00f4i c\u1ee9 sau hai n\u0103m (t\u1ee9c l\u00e0 theo lu\u1eadt Moore) cho n\u00ean c\u00e1ch nh\u00ecn c\u1ee7a t\u00f4i l\u00e0 n\u1ebfu b\u1ea1n ch\u1ecdn m\u1ed9t ngh\u1ec1 trong CNTT, b\u1ea1n kh\u00f4ng ph\u1ea3i t\u00ecm vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m m\u00e0 vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m s\u1ebd t\u00ecm b\u1ea1n.\u201d Ngh\u0129 v\u1ec1 t\u1ea5t c\u1ea3 nh\u1eefng th\u00e0nh t\u1ef1u ph\u00e1t minh c\u1ee7a 10 n\u0103m qua, v\u00e0 \u0111i\u1ec1u tr\u1edf th\u00e0nh r\u00f5 r\u00e0ng CNTT \u0111\u00e3 l\u00e0m thay \u0111\u1ed5i th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi nhi\u1ec1u l\u00e0m sao. Ngh\u0129 v\u1ec1 Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, hay iPhone, iPads, 4G mobile, K\u00ednh Google, \u00f4 t\u00f4 t\u1ef1 l\u00e1i, in 3D, v\u00e0 m\u1ecdi kh\u1ea3 n\u0103ng t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai m\u00e0 c\u00f4ng ngh\u1ec7 s\u1ebd \u0111em l\u1ea1i trong v\u00e0i n\u0103m t\u1edbi.\u201d<\/p>\n

Study Technology: A student’s perspective<\/p>\n

Jenifer was one of my students who graduated last year and currently working at Cisco. She wrote to me and wanted to share her experience with other students:<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor Vu usually does not ask recent graduates to share experience until they work in the industry for at least a few years; however I am excited and eager to share my experience since I am involved in recruiting graduates for our company. What really surprised me is many young people who are familiar with smartphones and tablets do not study information technology. I want to ask them: \u201cIf you like technologies why not study it? Why use it instead of create it?”<\/p>\n

\u201cToday the software industry is hiring every developer that they can find due to the critical shortage. Every day I read on the newspapers about unemployed young people looking for work and I ask myself: \u201cDo they really know that there is a shortage in Information Technology (IT) and technology companies are desperately looking for IT workers? Silicon Valley newspapers have three full pages of job openings and I count over seven thousand openings each day and the list is still growing so why not study technology? My manager told me that there are over 4 million job openings that must be filled by 2015 globally as this industry continues to expand in the coming year. Today IT is no longer a luxury but a necessity in our lives, the number of jobs is increasing fast and could double every two years (i.e., Moore\u2019s law) so my view is if you select a career in IT, you do not have to look for job but job will look for you.\u201d Just think of all the invention achievements of the last 10 years, and it becomes clear how much IT has changed the world. Just think about Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, or iPhone, iPads, 4G mobile, Google Glass, Self-driving cars, 3D printing, and all future possibilities that technology will bring in the next few years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter graduated, I thought that I will spend several years in programing and solving problems using my computer skills but my manager said: \u201cThere is bigger problem to solve and we need more people like you. Today college graduates do not want to talk to \u201cfifty years old\u201d manager anymore but they would be comfortable talking to recent graduates like you so I put you in charge of hiring people for our company.\u201d That is why instead of programming, he gives me the assignment of hiring hundreds of college graduates a year. After several weeks of training, they send me to Paris, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing to hire young computer science graduates. For me, the challenge is to solve the problem of shortage of skilled workers for my company. This is a different challenge due to the constantly evolving requirements in this fast-paced industry. The old way of hiring graduates by managers is obsolete as company told me that they want a new image of younger people who possess the latest technology skills and innovation. All companies know that they cannot stay with the same technology and the same business for long. They must grow fast and expanding fast by technology innovations. To do that they need younger workers and that is why they give people like me this responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday every business is relying on information technology to operate. From large banks to small retail stores, from e-commerce online stores to manufacturing factories and local foods market, there are many technology opportunities in all kinds of companies. A career in IT is no longer about sitting quiet in front of a desktop but it offers the potential to work in any industry, anywhere and anytime. Although I graduated last year and only worked for eight months but I already travelled to three continents and spend half of my time in foreign countries to recruit graduates for my company. My job is to talk to students about my company\u2019s Internet of Everything (where every device can communicate automatically, be it a smart-phone, smart-TV or smart refrigerator etc.). I discuss with them about the potential opportunities to grow, to discover, to explore and bind everything to technology with the hope that they want to work for my company.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInformation technology is constantly changing and if you have a lifelong learning attitude as well as problem solving and logical thinking you will never be bored in this industry. Aside from the technical challenge, there is opportunity to travel and meet people. My career has taken me from North America to Europe, and Asia attending global events and technology conferences, and allowed me to meet graduates from many countries and cultures. Of course the common question among foreign graduates is about salary as money is important in every career decision. I told them that entry-level jobs in my company is very competitive as we pay very high salary to recent IT skilled graduates regardless where they from. We have potential to advance quickly as more people move up with experience and so are their salaries. There are exciting places to work wherever they want to choose because we have offices and development centers all over the world. Graduates can choose San Jose, New York, Paris, Shanghai or Tokyo etc. and after few years they can switch location too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many opportunities waiting for skilled IT graduates so my advice to young people who are not sure what career to follow: \u201cYou should choose information technology.\u201d The industry is young but growing fast with excellent employment opportunities, great reward and wonderful chance to innovate but most of all, it gives you the opportunity to change the world. If you do not believe me, just look at Steve Jobs and see how much he has changed the world. Look at Mark Zuckerberg and see how he also changes things as more and more people are now connected via Facebook. I think we can do it too with \u201cThe internet of Everything\u201d because sooner or later, everything we do and everything we use will be connected, as we are living in a connected world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
