Lifelong learning is an attitude<\/p>\n

In this fast changing world, everybody needs to have lifelong learning skill. However this skill requires self-discipline, motivation, persistence as each person must take responsibility for their own learning. But most of all, it is an attitude toward learning:<\/p>\n

There are people who believe that learning is important to keep them active in life. Just like physical exercise make their muscles strong, by continuing learning make their mind become more active. To them lifelong learning a process of growing, changing, and adapting and even at very old age, their minds are still alert. In contrast, there are people who believe that learning stops after they left school. These people avoid learning for fear it will show their learning limitations. They do not like to change but prefer to follow a habit of doing the same thing without much thinking. As their brain atrophies with time, even at middle age, they already have symptom of forgetfulness or early sign of Alzheimer disease.<\/p>\n

There are people who have strong curiosity with the desire to find things out. They do not accept what they are told but study things until they understand completely. They believe that learning from others is superficial but come up with their own understanding is better. They are active on their own way to learn more until they understand everything. They want to see how things fit together. They want to know about the connection between what they are learning and what they already know. They try to make sense of things in terms of their own experience. They ask questions that help them put new knowledge in a larger context. They want to develop rules and formulas in their mind on how things fit together. To them lifelong learning is a process of exploration to satisfy their need to know. On the other side, there are people who tend to accept whatever they are told without any question. They do not like to think much and rarely explore new ideas but accept everything. They do not like to be bothered with complex thing and satisfy with their own limited knowledge. Their look at small pieces at a time and never understands the whole picture. They see the facts and data, but never bother to put it all together in ways that make sense to them as they do not want to think too much. They often depend on other people to help them and use their position for their sense of \u201cbeing important\u201d. They are passive in learning and afraid of making mistake so they tend to do as little as possible to minimize risks.<\/p>\n

There are people who see things from different perspectives. They like to explore new ideas and use their imaginations, visual imagery, pictures, and diagrams in their learning. They let ideas bubble up in their head for a long time before make decision so their thinking is always carefully thought out as purposeful, systematic thinking. They are good at reflection and self-evaluation as they are mindful of how they learn. They can assess tasks, determining how much time and what resources they will need. They like to organize their own learning by observing events, read books, take classes but they also know the learning requires solitary study times. On the opposite are people who prefer brief information that is easy to understand. They do not like anything complex but prefer to look at things from the simplest way and jump to conclusion quickly as they do not have patient to analyze. They prefer a routine way to follow and do not like ambiguous situations that require them to think. They do not care too much on details and often brush aside anything that make them have to work hard.<\/p>\n

After all, there are people who embrace changes and the future with anticipation and there are people who view the future with fear. The world is changing too fast for them and the future seems so unpredictable. Without learning new things, many prefer to live in the past and reluctant to venture to the present and the future. Unfortunately we are living in the time where change happens very quickly and that is why many people who could not learn or could not adjust are being eliminated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
