Answer: Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available to anybody to use, to change and distribute. In contrast Closed Source Software (CSS) is restricted and users must pay for access to the source code to use it. Open source software development is popular because it allows user to create new apps, and products from existing software. For example, many free mobile apps are created from open source software. Internet browsers such as Firefox or Chrome are also built from open source software.<\/p>\n

The goal of open source software is to make it available to everybody so they can develop many things that are useful for them and be able to do it exactly what they want. In contrast, close source software has restrictions on how the code can be used or changed. For example, PHP is open source software. Anyone who would like to use PHP can go to PHP.net to gain access to the source code, a how-to guide, and can start to develop something right away. If there is anything that limit you from doing what you want then you can change the source code to do whatever you want.\u00a0 Of course, you cannot do that with close source software such as Java as you cannot change the source code.<\/p>\n

The advantage of open source is you do not have to pay for the source code, you can change it anyway that you want, you also have a large community supports.
