The changing world<\/p>\n

Technologies change fast and threaten every business as well as every country. In the past thirty years, technologies have destroyed many established businesses but also created many new ones. However the benefits of technology do not spread equally to everyone but only to a few who understand the opportunities. Today there are many super-rich companies and very rich individuals who work in technology industry but there are many people who are struggling to survive and a lot of desperate people who lost their jobs and probably will never find another.<\/p>\n

Not long ago, there is a gap between the rich and the poor but today there is a very big gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Million unskilled workers are losing jobs every year and will never get them back. Economists called it \u201cLabor market polarization\u201d where there are an expanding job opportunities in high-skill, high-wage jobs and shrinking opportunities for low-skill, low-wage jobs. This situation is happening in every country and happens very fast. High unemployment has reached the crisis state in many countries and spreading to others quickly. Some economists called it \u201cThe unemployed bomb waiting to explode.\u201d The problem is that technologies give companies the opportunity to increase profits by eliminate millions of workers whose skills are being replaced by automation and robots. Today most factories do not need labor workers but still have higher productivity, better profits as they are using automation and robots. Now every country begins to feel the effect of information technology that people cannot believe that it happens that fast.<\/p>\n

Last month, three minutes after a minor earthquake in California, the Los Angeles Times already had an article about the event on its website, written by robots with a complex computer algorithm. It is not the first time U.S. newspaper has used automated reporting. With Big data, many newspapers are using robots writers who collect news and write articles faster than experienced journalists. Common news such as accidents, earthquakes, and fires are easily done by a machine as they are just reporting but complex news with certain analysis and commentary still need a professional journalist. It is predicted that in the near future, with complex machine learning algorithms, robots can also write complex analysis too.<\/p>\n

Today if you are highly educated and have technology skills that cannot be done by robots than you should not worry. You belong to the high-skilled group and you can enjoy the benefit of technology. If you are not educated or do not have the technology skills, you are at risk of losing job soon. Maybe not this year or next year but your job will not last as it will be replaced by automation sooner or later. Automation happened first in the U.S. then spreads to Europe, where in a short time it already creates high unemployment rate and it is predicted that by next year, it will reach countries like Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore where their industries need to be automated which means millions of people will lose their jobs. It is not a surprised that these countries are hurrying to improve their education systems to focus on science and technology as they know what will happen there soon.<\/p>\n

The key factor to survive this \u201ctechnology driven economy\u201d is having the right education, training, and skills to benefit from technological change. The right skills today are any field of study that support technology or cannot be replaced by automation. Every student need to ask: \u201cAm I studying in the fields that are in high demand such as Science, Technology, Engineering or Math? (STEM) or not? Do I have skills that cannot be replaced by the computer, or is the computer can do better than me?\u201d This is a serious question that must be answered honestly because your working life will last at least forty to fifty years but technology is changing much faster according to Moore\u2019s law. (i.e., double every two years).<\/p>\n

Some people believe \u201cIt cannot happen to me.\u201d Then face the brutal reality of what technology did for their careers. Few years ago, a friend in France told me: \u201cI work in government, not high paying job but very secure and I can relax until retirement.\u201d Few months after that, he was laid off and bitter: \u201cThey cannot do that to me, I spent 35 years working for the government.\u201d After several months being unemployed, he complained: \u201cFor every job that I applied they ask if I know how to use computer. I do not know that since in the last 35 years, I only use typewriter.\u201d It is predicted that with global economy, this phenomenon will spread all over the world, regardless of where you live and what you do; you may not be as safe as you think.<\/p>\n

Today with machine learning and artificial intelligence software, significant progress has been made toward smart systems that can think reason and act as effectively as humans. In the future, machines can do most jobs that people do today and there will be rapid productivity gains and economic growth, as robots can build almost everything people need at higher quality and for much lower prices. This is not fiction as it already happens in many places from developed countries then to developing countries since companies will use machines and systems that improve productivity and profits. The question is as young person, what can you do with this information?<\/p>\n

The fact is there are good technology jobs but competitive is high so you must be prepared to seize the opportunity when it comes. As students, you need to select the fields of study carefully and focus on developing your knowledge and skills that meet industry\u2019s needs. You need to figure out what skills are in high demand, not just this year but the next five to ten years and focus on your learning in areas that match those skills. If your school is slow to adapt changes, take courses in massive online open courses (MOOCs) or technical websites. You must follow technology trends and market trends on a daily and weekly basis as things change quickly and if needed, make some adjustments, having the right skills you can work for startup or even start your own company and seize the opportunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
