The technology-driven world<\/p>\n

We are currently in the \u201cKnowledge Age\u201d where technologies are changing many things and creating new opportunities for businesses if they know how to seize them. Social media, big data analytics, mobility, and cloud computing have created a significant changes in the way businesses are conducted and customers\u2019 buying behavior. For example, with Big data analytics available through smartphones, customers can compare prices easily among stores but companies can also track customers searching for things to buy to make special offers. As the company has a profile of customers\u2019 buying habit, it will continue to offer special discounts to keep customers from buying from others and establish a \u201crelationship\u201d to keep customers and grow their business. For example, if you buy anything from Amazon.com, the company will create a profile of you as it knows what you like and continue to promote other similar products to you.<\/p>\n

According to an industry report, currently the world has over 2 billion PCs, 3.2 billion smartphones, and 1.4 billion tablets in use and the number is still increasing. Young people spend on the average about fifty three minutes on their smartphones every day. We are also seeing emerging technologies such as wearable devices, self-driving cars, mobile wallets, mobile health, internet connected TV, and much more. The explosion of online businesses has changed how business is conducted as\u00a0 customers can buy anything from anywhere and at any time. It is predicted that most physical retail stores will close as online shopping is better, cheaper and more convenience. With online business, the market is wide open as customers are no longer belonging to one place or one country but everywhere. For example a customer is a remote village in Africa could buy things from an online store in China, made payment using a financial company in the U.S (i.e. Pay Pal) and have the merchandise delivered to his houses by an European transportation company. Since online stores appeared, over 85% of physical small retail stores in the U.S and Europe has shut down, only very large stores are still operating in shopping center but their profit has decreased steadily. With fast transportation, people can buy almost anything from on-line stores and makes Amazon.com the largest online store in the world.<\/p>\n

In the past, manufacturing produce products then sell them to retail stores. Retail stores must keep an inventory of products whether they sold them or not. With new inventory control technology, there is no need to buy and store products anymore. When customers buy a product, the data is collected then sent across the network to the manufacturing factory (maybe in another country). A replacement product is manufactured immediately and shipped back to the retail store. If the store sells 100 items, then 100 items are manufactured and if the store only sells 1 item then only one item is manufactured so the company never has to spend more than it needs and the manufacture can adjust its works accordingly. Everything in this complex process is controlled and managed by a supply chain control systems according to the supply lifecycle: Buying, selling, ordering, manufacturing, packing, distributing, and delivering then \u2026 repeat buying, selling \u2026etc. On the average, the global company selling about 3 billion items each day, from large items like TV, refrigerators to small items like soap, shampoo etc. Because of the absolute efficiency, giant companies like Wall-Mart, Amazon are expanding all over the world when local companies cannot compete and disappear from the retail market.<\/p>\n

In this connected world, financial and banking companies do not operate within a national boundary anymore but expand into the global market where people can open accounts, borrow, obtain loans, buy and sell stocks, bonds, and other commodities on line and pay using computer or smartphone. These on line activities lead to a huge data volumes that financial companies collect, organize, analyze and make available for reporting. As numbers of online transactions increase, numbers of frauds also increase too. As a result, financial companies are investing billions of dollars into their IT infrastructures just to keep up with the incoming data flow and security requirements. Traditional financial IT systems consist of database systems that provide and store information from users\u2019 queries. Because of security and regulatory compliance regulations, the financial company must replicate all data in a disaster recovery environment just in case something happen (Earthquake, fire, hackers, cyber-attack etc.) and every million dollars spent on the IT systems they have to spend another million for the replicated environment. Therefore to save money on IT systems, most financial analysts are limited to certain analysis on no more than a year\u2019s worth of data because anything extensive would consume a lot of computing resource. Therefore business intelligence activity is limited in the detecting fraud and risk factors.<\/p>\n

But with Big data technologies, important change is happening. Big financial companies are now using extract-transform-load (ETL) processing to collect all data transaction and run them through Hadoop for high performance analytics and identify incidence of fraud very quickly and saved billion dollars. An Analyst said: \u201cIn the past when using database and data warehouse to store data then run them through Business Intelligence software, we can only find frauds after it happened and it usually took several months to do that. By that time the criminals already left with a lot of money. However with Big data, we can predict unusual transactions, anything anomaly in the loans and transactions and focus on preventing fraud from happening in real time. When something unusual happens, we know immediately and stop it. We even can predict when it happens and preventing it from happening. That is why big data is the savior of financial institutions and banks today and in a very short time, every bank and financial company will have to implement big data analytics.\u201d<\/p>\n

These are few simple examples of information technology in the business world but changes are happening everywhere and at rapid rate. Not long ago, people only need to have a basic skills such as read, write and arithmetic but today, beside these basic skills everybody needs to have knowledge and skills about information technology because we are living in a world operates by computers and without this vital skills, we will not be able to function well.
