Learning Big Data<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cAs I enter my third year in Computer Science, what specific areas should I be focusing on? Currently there is no Big data class in my university and I cannot afford to study oversea. If Big data is important as you have written, where do I learn it? I want to make sure that I will have a good job to help my parents since my family is poor. Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: \u201cYou are selecting the right field to study and I believe that you will not have problem finding good job. At this time, I would recommend that you focusing on data design, databases, and business intelligence, etc. to build a good foundation on how data is being used in the industry. You do NOT need to go oversea to learn about Big data analytics but you can learn it NOW by using your computer to access the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) at edX, Coursera etc. There are at least forty Big data courses available the last time that I checked. Today, you can almost learn anything from MOOCs; the problem with MOOCs is most students do not have strong motivation and self-discipline to finish these courses. Several of my faculty friends who taught in MOOCs told me that over 85% of students never complete their courses, most attend few lectures then quit. It seems many only go to MOOCs to satisfy their curiosity than learn something. If you are serious about learning about Big data, make sure that you spend time to learn and complete all homeworks and tests to develop your knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n

As data analytics and data management are becoming more important in the industry, there will be high demand for these skills in every country. Soon its importance will be growing fast because companies are collecting data brought in by online transactions, social media, mobile computing and sensors, and by that time you will be ready. Strong data management skills are needed everywhere, especially in industries such as banking, healthcare, retail and energy. Data analytics is a skill that is in high demand, and the demand is growing rapidly. By focusing on develop these knowledge and skills on your own; you will surely be needed by companies in your country as well as global companies.<\/p>\n

I am very glad that you are thinking about helping your family as today many students only thinking about themselves. I have seen technology workers faced with their sudden \u201crichness\u201d of high wages often spend their money on \u201cfashionable gadgets\u201d to show off rather than appreciate what their parents have done for them. They would do anything just to demonstrate that they are \u201crich\u201d from the outside but unfortunately do not know much about their insides.
