The 21st<\/sup> century skills<\/p>\n

Although college is NOT for everybody but without a college education, it would be difficult to find a good job. If you go to college but do not have certain knowledge and skills, you will NOT get a job either because a college degree is NOT a guarantee for job anymore.\u00a0 You probably see that there are many unemployed graduates and people who have degrees but are working on jobs that do not require a degree.<\/p>\n

You do not have to take an economic course to understand the law of supply and demand: When there is high demand for specific skills but supply remains low than a skills shortage will happen which leads to higher wage for people who have those skills. When there is low demand for specific skills but supply remains high than a skills surplus will happen which leads to a lower wages for people who have that skills. Today all over the world, there is a high demand for people in STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), but the supply is low, therefore graduates in these fields are expected to get good jobs with high wages. Of course, it does NOT mean by having a degree in STEM field, you will automatically get a job. You still need knowledge and skills and you must make sure that the skills you are developing are practical not theoretical.<\/p>\n

Students often ask me: \u201cWhy should I go to college when there are many unemployed graduates?\u201d I give them a simple example: \u201cIf your motorcycle need repair, you take it to a repair shop. The mechanics who fix your motorcycle do not need a college education to do that. He may learn the skills from vocational school or having a few months of trainings but he can do a good job because he has the skills and experience. However if your body has problem (i.e., you have a heart attack or a stroke) that would be different. You need a medical doctor who has good college education, a lot of skills and experience to treat you. There are jobs that do NOT require a college education and there are jobs that do require a college education. It is NOT whether you should or should not go to college but whether THE JOB that you want to do requires a college education or not.\u00a0 If you want to be a Medical doctor, an engineer, a software developer, or a math professor, than you need to go to college and study STEM field.<\/p>\n

However technical skills are NOT enough, to succeed in this technology driven world, you need soft-skills. Traditional soft-skills such as communication, teamwork, presentation, and leadership are well known but there are new emerging soft-skills such as problem solving, the ability to ask questions and see all connections, (This is what Steve Jobs called \u201cconnect all the dots\u201d) the ability to understand priority by drawing parallels and distinctions, the ability to think in the future tense, the ability to do thing objectively, creatively, and collaboratively, the lifelong learning skills, the emerging leadership skills to step up when needed and to step down at appropriate time, the ability to be humble and calm during a crisis, and the ability to be ethical and responsible for your action etc. these new soft-skills constitute a new combination that is essential to teamwork in which each member adjust and adapt to the changing environment and they are critical to all companies that are shaping the global economy today.<\/p>\n

Even if you do NOT go to college, you still have to learn certain skills. Today learning is absolutely important because there are so much information that you need to know, so many skills that you need to have. Not long ago, basic skills such as reading, writing and basic mathematics skills are enough but today you also need to have information technology skills. No matter what you do, you need to know how to use a computer because many things are on the computer. You read online newspapers, buy thing from on line stores, checking information on line and do business on line too. In some countries, there are many things you can only buy online because the physical stores do not sell them anymore. Farmers and fisherman are now checking weather information on line rather than depend on news report because they are more accurate and update every five minutes. There are places to learn these skills, even if you do not go to college, you can still learn from online websites. Many top colleges are offering free online courses to anyone who wants to learn (MOOC). There are many tutorials for a variety of topics on the internet. If you are looking for something to learn, you can always find it on the Internet, from cooking to foreign languages. The internet provides all kind of classes that you can take, if you want to. You can also learn all the skills that you need to get a job from the Internet. Of course, first you have to learn how to use the computer and that is why this skill is so important today. To succeed in today\u2019s job market; you have to provide value in a way that other people do not. You have to have skills that are worth something to a company, and you have to demonstrate to them that you have those skills.<\/p>\n

In the past twenty years, technological advancement has eliminated many jobs that have existed for hundred years while creating whole new jobs that were never exist before. As technologies change fast, you will need to keep up by develop a lifelong learning attitude. The first step is to read more and follow the technology trends as well as the economic trends to set a clear direction of where do you want to go in your career. You also need to be practical and flexible to adjust with changes. If you are a college student, you should look into the future to determine which field would be in high demand by the time you graduate as you should not base on the job market today because things will change. For example, twenty years ago few people have mobile phone but today, many people are using it. Not long ago, Apple is a small company located on the garage of Steve Jobs\u2019s parents but today it is one of the largest companies in the world. Ten year ago no one knew about YouTube or Facebook but today they have billions of users.
