Plan your career<\/p>\n

Many college students do NOT know how to prepare for a career. Some just select a field of study, take classes, hope to graduate THEN and only then think about getting a job. They do NOT distinguish that a job is something you work and get paid and anybody can learn to do a job. A career is something that you have to be educated in to develop specific skills to do work and you want to stay with it for a long time, maybe all your working life. A career is a field that you choose but a job may NOT be what you choose but you have to do to make a living. That is why having a career plan is very important, and you need to have a strategy to achieve it. Without a clear vision and purpose, students may let things happen by chance then called it \u201cDestiny\u201d.<\/p>\n

Every student has strengths and weakness BUT weakness can be overcome, if they put in the efforts. Many people do not have the courage to overcome weaknesses so they let things happen and \u201cdrift\u201d from one field to another without direction. For example, they take a math class but not doing well so they quit and say that they are not good in math. Then they take a chemistry class but not doing well either so they quit and say that they are not good in chemistry. They continue to repeat this pattern until they get into something that they do well and believe that is their skill. Without a career plan that is structured around their strengths and weaknesses they just wasting time in college and graduate with a degree that has nothing to do with the market needs. Being unemployed, they complain about college education or criticize their school then go find any job or company that may hire them. Of course the pattern happens again, if they are not doing well then they quit and say that it is not a job for them. When select a field of study, you should NOT choose it randomly. You should have a good idea of exactly what is required for you to be a success and what the career opportunities are. You must look carefully whether there is any demand or qualifications that you must have to help you succeed and move up in your career and what the general salary is for different levels. Many graduates told me that if there is anything they could change from when they started college, it would be more carefully about selecting field of study and build a better relationship with their professors. Having someone who can help them and guide them in their education journey is important. From a career perspective, it is critical to get help from someone who knows them well and have a good idea of their abilities and direction.<\/p>\n

No one is perfect but if you set a goal each year toward your long term career, you will be successful. Students should decide how they can improve their performance each year by identify weaknesses and find way to improve them. The most important thing about setting goals is to stick with it. Of course, goal must be something reasonable and achievable. For example, if you set goal to study 4 hours every night then stick to it. If you cannot follow what you have set to yourself then you need to know why and try to overcome it. If you set goal to be the top five students in your class then you should constantly monitor your progress and if you do not achieve it, you must ask yourself why. Many students told me that the number one issue of NOT achieving their goal is TIME management as they do not have good study habit and often get distracted by other activities. Of course, there are many things happening in college but it is important to remind yourself why you are in college: You go to college to learn and to graduate so learning should always come first when it comes to organize your time.<\/p>\n

When you look at your school works each week, you need to figure out what your time commitments are. What time do you have classes? How much homework do you have to do? What reading assignments you must read? When do you have exams or quizzes? Then you can estimate how much time you must spend to study. For each hour in class, you need at least two hours of study. If you have a test\u00a0on Friday\u00a0and you need 4 hours to study for it, you should spend two hours\u00a0on Tuesday\u00a0and one hour\u00a0on Wednesday\u00a0to study, and one hour\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0to review everything that you have learned. And keep those study hours with yourself and NOT doing anything else. Time management is a skill that takes time to learn and time to master. Be patient as your learn how to manage your time in college because if you can master it, it will be something that will help you in your career too. Of course, it is unrealistic expectation to think that you can go to class then study all day, every day. Your brain needs a rest too so you will need time to relax to spend time with friend too but avoid something that may interfere with your education goal.
