A teacher<\/p>\n

Traditionally, teacher is the source of knowledge and classroom is where the transfer of knowledge happens. In these classrooms, teachers lecture verbally and students listen attentively. Since most classes are large, students are told to be quiet and not to disrupt the learning of others. There is a clearly separation of roles between the teacher and students as teacher is the authority that must be respected.<\/p>\n

Today education environment has changed. The source of knowledge may not be the teacher but could be the Internet, textbooks, ebooks, news, TV shows, websites, or blogs. Learning is no longer limited to classroom but can happen anywhere. There are virtual schools, on line courses, and electronic tutorials on CD, DVD and on the internet etc. Student can learn any subject, anytime and anywhere they want. In this new environment, a\u00a0teacher\u2019s role is no longer just giving lecture but also motivate students to learn and teaching them how to learn effectively.<\/p>\n

Good teaching is about caring, nurturing and developing student to keep open minds for continuous to learn new things. It is about keep students\u2019 interests in their field of study.<\/p>\n

Today knowledge is not confined to academic theories but also about bridging the gap between theory and practice. Today education is no longer an ivory tower for a few elites but for everybody. It is about creating a connection with all the world events as students must have knowledge about the world as it is getting smaller and \u201cflatter\u201d.<\/p>\n

A good teacher should not follow a fixed agenda but being flexible, experimenting, and having the confidence to adjust to changing circumstances. It is possible to deviate from the course syllabus when there is a better material elsewhere. A good teacher should also have strong vision about what students could do and could achieve. A good teacher continues to support students to achieve that vision that eventually will transcend the entire society. A good teacher knows how to listen, question, being responsive and remembering that each student is different with its own mental state and maturity. A good teacher knows how to encourage and how to push students to excel.<\/p>\n

A good teacher dedicate to excel in educate students in making a difference in the world and encourage students to contribute to the society. Good teachers do it not for the money but because they enjoy it and want to make a difference in the world via their dedication and diligence. Few years ago, I met a famous symphony orchestra conductor\u00a0at\u00a0a party. When he knew that I am a teacher, he told me that: \u201cA teacher is the conductor as the class is your orchestra. All students play different instruments and at varying proficiencies. A teacher\u2019s job is to develop skills and make these instruments come to life as a coherent whole to make wonderful music for the world.\u201d I never forget that and often keep that in my mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
