Teaching Computer Science<\/p>\n

According to the Information Technology (IT) industry report, beginning this Fall (2014) computer science (CS) will be taught in many U.S. high school and count as a mathematics or science credit, rather than as an elective. High school students will take \u201cIntroduction to Information Technology\u201d; \u201cData structures and algorithms\u201d and \u201cIntroduction to Java programming\u201d as part of their high school education.<\/p>\n

There is widespread support from parents that by having more high school students being exposed to technologies early will encourage them to pursue STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in colleges. Data from U.S government indicated that by 2020, there will be 1.6 million new jobs create in the IT field, but without any immediate action, the U.S. can only produce about 400,000 graduates to fill them. At the same time, there are many unemployed college graduates because if young people are not exposed to technology at early age, they may not interest in pursuing a technology careers.<\/p>\n

After the news is announced, a mother told local newspapers: \u201cI have three sons, one graduated in Business Administration last year but still unemployed. I do not want it to happen to my other two sons who are still in high school. Teaching computer in high school is the best thing to ensure that my two sons will study computer in college then have jobs when they graduate.\u201d A representative of the U.SCollege board assured: \u201cThere is a critical shortage of IT skilled workers in the next ten years, and anyone who study IT will not have to worry about finding job. We need more IT students in college.\u201d An IT industry representative added: \u201cIn the future, students who do not have understanding of information technology and computer skills will not be able to get good jobs because in this connected world, everything you do have technology in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The computer Science Teaching Group, a special group that advocates the teaching computer science in high school says that they have been working behind the scenes to broaden access at the high school level for more than two decades. A representative said: \u201cThe interest we are seeing now is a culmination of a lot of people working really hard for many years. It is very hard to change educators\u2019 minds as they are very conservative and do not consider technology as a replacement for science and math. We have to provide trainings to high school teachers to help them understand technology and what it can help students to do well in this Information Age.” At the same time, the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), have been laying the foundational work about computer science education throughout the U.S by helped trained 10,000 computer science teachers in 10,000 high schools. The Code.org, funded by Google and Microsoft also started its campaign with a video featuring basketball star Chris Bosh, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and other celebrities, explaining the importance of learning to code. The Code.org video went viral, and it has been viewed more than 11 million times on YouTube.<\/p>\n

The recent economic recession also turned the public’s attention to preparing students for future jobs and suddenly computer science became a hot issue where many parents demand schools to teach computer science. Among teachers who are proficient in computer science, turnover is a problem, because most often leave the teaching job for more-lucrative jobs in industry and there is a critical shortage of high school teachers who can teach computer.
