A conversation in Japan<\/p>\n

Not long ago, Japan’s electronic industry was the dominant force with brand names like Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, and Sharp but today all of these companies are losing billions of dollars a year and can bankrupt soon. Few weeks ago when I taught a seminar in Tokyo, I noticed many students had iPhones and iPads, when I asked them: \u201cWhy Apple and not Sony?\u201d the answers were unanimous: \u201cIt is better and easier to use.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Japanese professor explained: \u201cWe have been very successful in hardware such as TVs, radios, cassette players, even refrigerators, and washing machines etc. but we ignored software. If you look at our most successful device, the Sony Walkman with hundred millions sold all over the world, it is hardware device with no software in it. Suddenly the iPod appeared with its complex software and everything changed and our market shattered.”<\/p>\n

I asked: \u201cSo Apple\u2019s iPods killed the Sony\u2019s Walkman?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head: \u201cIt is worse than that. Apple destroyed our entire hardware industry. They did not just make just iPods but also iPhone then iPads and who know what they will do next? This is a completely new market with software controls everything. We did not look at software because we were obsessed with hardware and our success gave us an invincible notion that we controlled the electronics consumer market but technology changed and we could not catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked: “So software changed the market?\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained: “Japan\u2019s electronic industry is facing several issues: On hardware, we have to compete with S. Korea which can built the same quality products but have better marketing and advertising strategy. We also have to compete with China who also built similar products at much lower prices. Both of them have the advantage. In this competitive world, if you make a mistake you cannot recover. The biggest mistake we made is not pay attention to software. Hardware industry is over now as with integrated chips, it is easy to build and many countries can copy it. It is software that creates the competitive advantage now.”<\/p>\n

I asked: \u201cSo you think the future is in software?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded: \u201cOf course, if you look at all successful companies in Silicon Valley, they are all software companies such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Amazon etc. These companies are now dominating the market with no competitors. To survive Japan has to switch to software.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pondered: “Your country has one of the best education systems and highly educated workforce so changing from hardware to software should not be difficult. How long do you think the transformation will happen?”<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cFor many years, software has been neglected in Japan. Most universities are full of hardware professors but not many software professors so to switch to software we need to train more software professors. To improve our education with a new direction that focuses on software, we must starts with university professors and develop a good training program. This would take several years before we can really improve our position in the global competitive market. Today we have to hire a lot of software engineers from other countries and outsource software development until we have enough skilled workers. In the past few years, we have made progress in computer games in Sony\u2019s PlayStation console but we still behind others by many years. However our vision is clear, if you visit Sony website, you can see the message about the company\u2019s new direction: \u201cSony is reinventing itself to deliver new and exciting experiences.\u201d Sony is working on many mobile devices, new cameras and all of them are also connecting to many home devices such as kitchen, washing machines etc. The next competitive market will be fought on the \u201cInternet of thing\u201d gadgetry market. We believe that within the next few years, everything electronic will be connected wirelessly to the Internet and software will be the key enabler and whoever controls these software will controls the market. This is a U.S $500 billion market annually so we cannot miss. That is why we put so much efforts in develop more software engineers. We hope to reverse our misfortune in hardware and be successful in this new software market.
