Economists have warned that in this Information Age, there will NEVER be a stable period anymore. Every business will be moving from one change to another due to intense global competition and only the best will survive. This will happen in EVERY industry, not just those dealing with technology. All companies will be facing issues such as consolidation, dissolving, merging, acquisition, and bankruptcy because change is part of the globalized world. To stay ahead of the change rather than being impacted by it, EVERY manager must understand information technology because the DRIVER for changes is TECHNOLOGY.<\/p>\n<p>As the world is getting more connected, there are more opportunities to engage more people, more customers, more businesses, more ideas, more innovations and more changes as technology will accelerate change. For example, sixty years ago only large companies had mainframe computers and only few scientists knew how to use it. With the invention of personal computers, every company can put a computer in every worker\u2019s desks and many people can learn how to use it to improve their productivity and efficiency. Now most workers have their own computer inside their pocket and smart phone will make things happen much faster and more convenience.<\/p>\n<p>Currently many companies DO NOT know what to do with the available information. There is a large amount of information available on the Internet that can be used to their advantage with just a few mouse clicks. The question is how many company leaders are familiar with information technology? How many managers really understand global trends and market competition? How many of them know how to use this information to their advantage? Company leaders are person who set direction and guide the company but without proper knowledge, they cannot anticipate change and adjust the company direction to stay competitive to meet market demands. That is why in the past few years, millions of company had collapsed, filed for bankruptcy as they could not compete.<\/p>\n<p>To change means to abandon the old way and adopting a new way of doing business. It is NOT comfortable, it is NOT easy but without change with market trends, the company can NOT survive. Nobody likes to change but in this changing world, it is NOT an option. Not long ago many secretaries had to learn to use computer although they were very good with typewriters. They did not like it but they had to learn new thing to keep their job. When online stores opened, millions of small retail stores closed because more people are buying online and the market for online is growing fast. The same thing happened when mobile phone replaced wired telephone and people had to carry their phone with them and were constantly being disrupted. They could not have excuse that they were not in the office to answer phone anymore. Today many have to learn to use smartphone as technology is changing. It means that they have to work wherever they go and at any time. With technology people have to abandon what they are comfortable with and learn something new.<\/p>\n<p>To manage company in this fast changing world, leaders must guide workers through change. It means they must first understand information technology and what it does; then they must develop certain knowledge to use it to their advantage. They also have to eliminate the fear of change in workers and guide the company through changes. Company leaders must recognize that workers will resist change but as leaders, they must use proper guidance to help them learn to accept change. In this globalized world, competition is fierce and change is a part of the competition. If you do not change, you will be eliminated, if you do not adjust, you will lose. For example, thirty years ago, the U.S. controlled the consumer electronics market with famous brands like RCA, GE, and Motorola etc. but lost the market to Japan because they could not change fast enough. Many U.S. leaders were familiar with analog technology but not digital technology. During the 1980s and 1990s, most consumer electronics devices such as TV, radio and stereo equipments were all made in Japan by brands such as Sony, Panasonic, and Hitachi etc. Beginning in 2000s and 2010s, technology changed again and the control of market shifted to S. Korea and Taiwan with brands like Samsung, LG, HTC, Asus, and Acer etc. What will happen next? It depends on who can change FAST ENOUGH to keep ahead of technology.<\/p>\n<p>Today technology dominates everything and knowledge of technology is CRITICAL to every manager. Not long ago, large manufacturing companies dominate global market but today, it is the technology companies. Not long ago, Exxon Oil Company was the largest company in the world with hundred billion dollars in revenue but today Apple Computer and Google have the largest annual revenues. Not long ago, the list of billionaire consisted of mostly industrialists such as Ford, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Carnegie but today most of them are technology entrepreneurs such as Gates, Zuckerberg, Page, and Ellison. It is a clear evident that the Industry Age is over as we are in the Information Age and if leaders and managers do not have knowledge of information technology, company will not survive.<\/p>\n<p>Company leaders must set the vision of what will be possible for the company in the future. Although many people like to hold on to the past but to move ahead, leaders must set a clear vision for company and lead the change because without their involvement, people will tend to revert to the old way and the vision is nothing but just \u201cfew words\u201d. Leaders must know when things slip back into old ways of thinking and remind people \u201cThis is what the direction is and where we are going.\u201d It is important to let workers see something new and exciting that is different from the old way because it will give them the energy to accomplish what needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>During the change, it is important that managers at all levels understand the company\u2019s vision well. They receive direction that come down from the top, but they also have to deal with the resistance from workers in the bottom. They may not see the vision as clearly as the leaders and they may not like the change as they often want to cling to the old way. But if they do NOT manage well, change will NOT happen so leaders must pay attention to all managers because their understanding of the company\u2019s vision can made a big difference in the success or failure of the company. Managers must understand that change is top priority to achieve the vision and if they can stay focus, change will happen. Fundamentally, change is NOT technical but all about attitude. People can choose their attitude whenever they want.
