The Big Data trends<\/p>\n

According to Japanese\u2019s study about Asian market, companies could increase revenue by 25 % to 65% using big data and the potential market could reach $250-billion US dollars in 2020. The research team have surveyed over 500 big Asian companies and found that more than half have no idea what big data means as compare with U.S and European companies and that ignorance could put them in a significant disadvantage in the global market.<\/p>\n

The research found that 68% of executives admitted that they never hear of \u201cBig Data\u201d and for a few who knew something about it; they considered it is too complex so they ignored it. The research warned that as U.S and European companies are moving quickly into Asian market, it will give them advantages to capture this market from local owned companies. It recommended that Asian companies need to adopt a new approach where data should be treated as “capital asset” and develop big-data strategies to give them insights in their own market so they can compete with foreign companies.<\/p>\n

The authors wrote: “Today many Asian companies are still making decision based on monthly report and most of them are not accurate. In the global market in which things change by minute, Asian managers are still relying on report that took month to write so their decision are always late to respond to market. It explains why recently many Japanese companies are losing market to western companies. Without proper use of big data analytics, they do not have capability to realize the full potential of the information that they have. It is time for owners and executives to look at data like a capital asset and quickly develop big data plans as it can bring a significant impact to their business. It is time for the information technology group to take the lead and involve in the business planning to deliver essential information to the people who can use it to increase revenues.”<\/p>\n

The research found that many Asian firms have had limited success so far in the global business and could lose most of it to more aggressive western companies. The main reasons are the slow adoption of big data in most business, poor internal communication and information sharing, lack of in-house IT skills as IT is still treated as a supporting function not a strategic function. Big Data brings in the possibility of a fundamentally different type of decision making. Using software analytics tools, companies can test hypotheses and analyze results to guide investment decisions and operational changes. In effect, data analytic can help managers distinguish causation from mere correlation, thus reducing the variability of outcomes while improving financial and product performance.<\/p>\n

For example, the fast food company McDonald\u2019s has equipped their stores with software that gather operational data as they track customer interactions; traffic in stores, and ordering patterns.
