Technology jobs for women<\/p>\n

Barbara is one of my students in the Information System Management (ISM) who graduated four years ago and currently working at Oracle. Last week, she came back to recruit students for Oracle and I asked her to share her experience with my students. Following was what she told the class about her career in technology:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cMany women do not select Information Technology (IT) because they do not know that there are jobs in technology industry that they can do. When I mention the word \u201cinformation technology\u201d, people always think of coding and testing. When I meet female students, they often told me that they do not like to write code or want to work as software developer. The fact is there are many jobs in technology industry that has nothing to do with coding or testing. Technology Company is just a business focusing on technology; it does not mean all they do is code or test. The thing I would tell college students is to try a lot of different things because there are so many jobs in IT and it is important to find the ones that you like. You must try some things, figure out what you are good at and then work to your advantages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I went to Carnegie Mellon, I selected Business Administration. In my Finance course, I had to use pencils and paper to chart out budgets so I thought; maybe a computer can do this better so I learned to use Microsoft Excel to do work for my Finance class. After that I asked myself, why business classes are still teaching the old way of doing work with paper and pencils and do all calculation by hands instead of using computer so I took the \u201cIntroduction to Information Technology\u201d and this class opened my mind to what technology can do. I felt that this is what I have been looking for so I switched to Information System Management. I love challenge and this type of work suit me well because technology opens many opportunities that rarely exist before. My father worked for a large manufacturing company and it took him more than ten years to get to management position and another ten years to move up to director level. It is hard to move up in the traditional corporate world but technology industry is fast paced as things always change with new opportunities opening all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a student in Information System Management, I learned to write code such as Java, C++, HTML, and PHP. Although I could build websites and mobile applications, I did not like coding but I did extremely well in project management, requirements engineering, database, data mining, and service management classes. When graduated, I told the recruiters that I prefer a management position instead of development works. Some companies did not like it as they expected graduates to start as developers but Oracle gave me an opportunity when I told them that I am an ambitious person and I wanted to prove that I could do it. Oracle managers liked my confidence and gave me a small project to start. My education training at CMU really helped as I get the project completed on time, within budget. The second project was difficult but I knew that they want to test me so I put in my efforts and again, it was a success. After another successful project, I gained reputation as a good project manager and received a lot of respect from software developers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking as a woman in technology is exciting because most people are men so you have an advantage. For example, when you ask them to do something with your smile, who would say \u201cNo\u201d. When you ask them \u201cPlease\u201d make sure to fix all defects, most are willing to please you and the defects are fixed. Developers may not like the schedule but when you tell them \u201cPlease help me to complete this work by this schedule date.\u201d Most are willing to do that even they may have to work longer and over the weekend. After four years, I learned that most people who work in technology love their work. They are passionate about their works and the workplace is their family, their home so they spend most of their time at work. They love solving problems, the more challenging the better as they would work hard on complex technical issues. Because technology changes fast, working at technology company is fast paced and I am a fast learning person so I love it as there are so many things to learn. This is where women are better than men as we are constantly thinking about many things and doing many things all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology companies always look forward to the new innovations. There are many people working on new inventions, new technologies and there are always something exciting happening. If you have certain interests, you can find people with similar interests so it is very easy to find friends who share your passion because in technology industry everything is dynamic, supportive, and friendly. Technology jobs pay good money, much more than others. When most of my friends who study Business, Finance and Banking graduated, some were lucky to find employment but I had several offers and I made twice as theirs. When I told them, they were shock that after just four years in college, I could make that much money. Even my father was surprised since my salary was very close to him who spent more than thirty years in the traditional industry. You can move up quickly in technology company and make good money while doing it. The skills you learn in technology company are needed by others so you never have to worry about job. I know that I can get any job that I want since I have the knowledge, the skills and the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday there is so many types of jobs that technology companies need such as project manager, service manager, database administrator, business analysts, network manager, requirements engineer, service manager etc. All of these positions are best for women since women are good at communication, managing, organizing and many things that are natural to us but maybe difficult to men. As women who work in technology, I want to share with you about my short working experience and the benefits of working in the technology industry. I want to emphasize that there are many jobs available that women should consider so that more women know that you do NOT have to be a developer or tester to work in technology industry. We do NOT need women who can code in technology industry but we need all kinds of women with all kinds of skills.
