The “App economy and jobs”<\/p>\n

According to U.S. government data, the number of software developers focusing on mobile applications has reached over a million in 2012. Mobile apps have created a new group of developers who turned mobile phones and tablets into tools for discovering, organizing, and controlling many things. It became a multi-billion-dollar industry in just few short years. The iPhone and iPad have over 900,000 apps, and Android phones and tablets probably have over a million apps.<\/p>\n

The government data found that although there are a million app developers but few have made it to the million dollar level, most only made $2000 to $10,000 per app. One mobile app developer explained: \u201cFew years ago, it is possible to earn million dollars by writing apps for the iPhone. Today there are too many developers so competition is tough. With million apps at App stores, customers do not know which one to buy. The Apple and Android apps market are already saturated with so many apps and developers. The better opportunity is switch to Window 8 since there is much less competition and fewer apps there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The explosion of mobile apps is changing the way people work at an accelerating speed. It also creates enormous wealth for some companies. Four of the ten most valuable companies in the world are Apple, Google, Microsoft and IBM and they are all technology companies. A Wall Street analyst said: \u201cTechnology is where people make money. Technology is the most profitable business, even more profit than oil, manufactures and illegal drugs. It the best place to invest and it is the best business to be in this globalized world. This is the new economy that is still growing fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apple is the company that starts the \u201capp economy\u201d with the iPhone and iPad. Since Apple encouraged developers to build applications for its products four years ago, it has paid them more than $6.5 billion in royalties. An industry study found that \u201capp economy\u201d created by Apple, Facebook, and Google was responsible for the creation of half million new jobs for the economy. Apple alone claimed that its business had generated 300,000 jobs for the American economy. Apple chief executive commented that just a few years ago nobody even knows what \u201cmobile app\u201d is but now it is everywhere and create a new job segment that didn\u2019t exist before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many economists agreed: \u201cMobile apps create jobs, mostly for young people who really need job in this recession time.\u201d But a Wall Street analyst cautions: \u201cMost app developers are college students and they create mobile apps for fun, not making money. When they graduate, the situation may be different as they must find jobs and develop app is not a full time job.\u201d The software industry disagreed, a company owner said: \u201cThere is a shortage of skilled workers, especially in mobile app sector. Mobile app is not just games or something fun. It has a huge potential in advertising, marketing, healthcare, e-government, and online business that have not even been exploited. As more people are using smartphone, there is a giant market of mobile apps waiting to be discovered. Whatever happens in the PC market will also happen in the mobile market. If Microsoft and Google are making a lot of money in the PC market, there is also an opportunity in the mobile market too. Mobile apps are not games and photos sharing but much more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today few mobile apps have made it big, except Instagram, the photo-sharing app that was bought by Facebook for $1 billion and made the company of 12 people very rich. However most developers make money when people buys their app from Apple\u2019s online store, the only place consumers can buy an iPhone or iPad app. Apple keeps 30% of each app sale. While the company has paid $6.5 billion to app developers, it does not mention that half of that money goes to developers outside the United States as more Indian and Chinese are moving into this market now.<\/p>\n

The next market in mobile app may not be games but healthcare as this market is beginning to explode with hundred apps already in the market, many came from India. An India government officer said: \u201cWhen outsourcing business slows down, we can make up by export more mobile apps. It already reaching over a billion dollars in export revenues and created several thousand jobs in just one year.\u201d A software developer explained: \u201cMobile app is relatively new business, it is easy to get in, and it is easy to train. Anyone can learn in just few months about IOS and objective C. They may not make a lot of money, but few thousand dollars per mobile app is good enough.
