Learning new skills<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI graduated with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Business administration but unemployed for more than a year. Although I am still living with my parents but I feel very frustrated. I have tried many things but could not find work. Since I read your blog, I am sorry that I did not know about all the opportunities in technology as I am not a technology person. I wish I know it several years ago but it is too late and I do not know what to do. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: \u201cIt is never too late to do anything. If you want to learn something you can do it regardless how old you are. Many students confused between the degree and the skills. Having a degree does not means you have the skills; and do not have degree also does not means you do not have the skills. You say that you are not a technology person but do you use technology? Do you know how to use a computer? Do you know how to use a smartphone? Do you play videogames? If you do, you already have technology skills.<\/p>\n

You do not have the technology degree but you do have some technology skills and you could learn more and develop additional technology skills that are needed by the industry. Today technology industry is exploding and there is a shortage of technology skilled people all over the world. If you are willing to learn and put in some efforts you could gain employment in technology industry. Contradict to some opinions, technology is NOT difficult and they can be learned quickly. You can learn how to program in few months and you could learn about technology if you read more technical articles to broaden your knowledge. You could select what area that you are interested in and focus on learning more. A motivated people with good attitude to learn can do anything that they want. Currently technology companies are always seeking candidates for positions in business analysis, business intelligence, project managers, and product developers. These positions are suitable for someone with your business skills who are willing to learn more about technology.<\/p>\n

It is possible for a company to hire someone who are motivated and train them in technology than hiring someone with a technology degree but not motivated to learn anything. It would be better to invest in developing a person who have a lifelong learning attitude than someone who only on relying on a degree just to get a job. Today companies do not hire people based on degree anymore but based on their skills and attitude. If you have skills, you can get any job that you want. As long as you can demonstrate your skills and your desire to work in technology areas, you may have a good chance.<\/p>\n

My advice is to put in some efforts to learn some technology skills by yourself. There are plenty of resources to help you learn basic skills on your own. For example, online courses from KhanAcademy, MOOCs (EdX, Coursera, etc.) can help you to develop basic knowledge and skills. If possible, you may want to consider to go back to school to get a second degree in Information System Management. Technology industry offers good opportunity and it still needs workers. Even if you do not have the degree but have the skills, there is nothing stopping you from achieving your career goal. So get out, learn new skills, and be aggressive to find works. Do not stay home and feel sorry for yourself. You are still young and have a bright future ahead. Do not be afraid, do not hesitate, just put in the efforts than you will change everything.
