The best field of study for women<\/p>\n

A student wrote: \u201cAs a first year college woman, I have been advised to select \u201cTraditional fields for women\u201d such as Education, Interior Decoration, Public relation, Environment, and Literature. When I asked about Science or Technology, I was told that those fields are for men, the fact is very few women would select science or technology. I am confused, what is the best field of study for women? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Whoever advise you is wrong. Today college women can select any field of study that they want and no one should discourage them from achieving their education goals. We are not in the 18th century but in the 21st century and college women are no longer passively stay in \u201ctraditional fields\u201d anymore. Today college women belong to a new generation that grows up with science and technology; they have much broader view about the world around them due to the vast amount of information available on the Internet and social media etc. They know what is best for them and make their own decision to achieve it.<\/p>\n

College women today are different from women few decades ago. They are more determined and have a lot of ambitions about their career. They are not satisfy with what they are taught but seek out information from other sources such as Facebook, Twitter, technical websites, tutorial videos, and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to learn new things. For many years of college teaching, I found that most college women read more than men and they often share with friends on what they know. They do not hesitate to challenge other male students in class and actively participate in discussion to prove their view. When they learn something new, they put them in their Facebook or Twitter account to share with friends. A professor complained: \u201cToday students do not talk but \u201cTweet\u201d; they do not write but \u201cText\u201d. I laughed: \u201cAs long as they are learning and communicating, I am not concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is there a best field of study for women in college? Yes, the best field is whatever they want as they have a choice to select anything that meets their learning goal. Of course, as a professor in technology my view is biased. I believe science and technology are excellent career for anyone as we are entering the \u201cInformation Age\u201d where there is a high demand for people with these skills. I would suggest that you select the Information Technology area such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information System Management. By having a Bachelor\u2019s degree in one of these fields, you can build a very good career. I had several students who already achieved top positions in technology area, one was the founder of a startup that do very well recently. Some of them often return to Carnegie Mellon to recruit graduates for their company.<\/p>\n

One of my students, Heather who is a manager at Microsoft told my class: \u201cWhen I took the \u201cIntroduction to Computer Science\u201d course ten years ago, I was the only woman in class. Now as I return as a guest speaker in this class, the number of women is about a third. I think women have made tremendous progress and I hope in the next few years women will occupy a half and no one should say computer science is for men only. Many years ago, If you asked people in my class if I could be a software engineer, most probably said no, some even bet that I would drop out. Today I manage over seven hundred software engineers and most of them are men. My advice to other women is do not be afraid; do whatever you want as the sky is the limit. There are so many jobs in IT today and it is important to find the ones that you like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today college women have many heroes in the technology sector such as Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer; Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and countless number of successful women in the technology.
