Intership and working at Google<\/p>\n

Information Technologies (IT) has changed many things and impacts every business regardless of their size or location. IT is the key driver for economic prosperity, especially in this \u201cFlat\u201d world where borders are disappearing and competition is fierce. Therefore the competitiveness of a country\u2019s economy will depend on how fast they can adopt technology and how many skilled workers that they have.<\/p>\n

Today every business is using technology to increase their competitiveness but technology alone is NOT enough, they need skilled technical people too so every company is looking for these workers and the competition for them start very early in college with summer interns. According to an industry study, this summer the average intern at Google makes $5,787 monthly and some can see monthly earnings as high as $6,432. That is higher than most other Silicon Valley\u2019s technology companies but still below interns at Microsoft who often get $7,050 per month. Interns at Google typically spend three months of full-time work, which means the average intern making $6,000 monthly would take home nearly $20,000 after one summer. The lowest wages among internships come from Financial, Banking companies such as Merrill Lynch pays $1,554 per month and Scottrade, which offers $1,715.<\/p>\n

A college student explained: \u201cThese data reflects the actual situation in the job market today. In the U.S and all over the world, technology is \u201cHot\u201d and financial and banking are \u201cCold\u201d and no longer the desire degrees as many graduates are unemployed. Last year, most technology interns returned to school with full time job offer although they have not even graduate yet. This year will probably be the same for many college students. During the internship, salary is just the beginning, interns also enjoy special benefits such as free tickets to concerts, free movies, free gym and massages and some can even borrow a sport car for the weekend if they do well. All technology companies need skilled workers so they treat them very well and hope that they will join them after graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n

A foreign student at Google added: \u201cAs a Chinese student who comes to Google just for the summer, the $6,000-per-month pay is beyond any imagination. There is a restaurant that open 24 hour for interns, and a fully-equipped gym and on-site massages. It is more than a dream as you do not see anything like that anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another intern said: \u201cSilicon Valley is the center of technology, there are hundred companies and they all need people like us. However Google is unique because we work with the latest innovative technology and building products that are changing the world. I cannot imagine a third year student like me is working on Android that being used in many mobile phones around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
