Jobs of the future<\/p>\n

A high school student asked me: \u201cI will go to college next year, what jobs do you think will be in high demand in 2019 when I graduate? What do I need to make sure that I will get a good job? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: I am glad that you are thinking about the future when you are planning for your college education and the need to develop certain skills. First, go to college is essential because most of the future jobs (84%) require a college degree. Second, you must select college that has the best and the most up to date training program rather than any college because your future depends on your training and the school\u2019s reputation. Third, you must select the field of study that has high demand to make sure that you have the skills that the industry needs. The pace of change in the world is moving faster than ever because of globalization and information technology. Therefore, by select any field that associated with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) would be a good choice. Since technology changes quickly, you must develop a lifelong learning attitude after you graduate from college as you need to continue to improve your skills to differentiate yourself from others in this highly competitive job market.<\/p>\n

If you look at the high demand jobs today, you will see that most of them are related to Science (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Nursing, Dentist, and Optometrist etc.) Technology (Medical technology, Biotechnology, Computing technology, Semiconductor technology, and Nanotechnology etc.) Engineering (i.e., Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Software Engineering etc.) and Math (Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Statistics etc.). Unfortunately, many students do not know about this demand and select other fields such as social sciences, finance, history, literature, music, drama, decoration, architect which are not in high demand.<\/p>\n

The above are general fields of study that have high demand but if you have to be more specific than I think computer science, software engineering, information system management, electrical and electronics engineering, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering and statistics all have very high demand and continue to have a shortage in the next five years.
