After high school, students have a choice whether to go to college or not. This is a difficult decision because there are advantages and disadvantages to go to college. Many people say that since there are many unemployed college graduates who still depend on family\u2019s supports, going to college is a waste of time and money. By go to work after high school is better since they can make money and help the family. I do not disagree with that view because college is NOT for everybody but I think some students would have better opportunity and more successful career by go to college. As the world is now \u201cflat\u201d, technologies change many things, and society has continued to evolve and integrate, college education has become a necessity and the best way to develop professional careers.<\/p>\n

From the financial aspect, on the average, a person with only a high-school diploma will makes 42% LESS than a person that gets a bachelor\u2019s degree. A master\u2019s degree on average will make 18% MORE than a bachelor\u2019s degree. Based on these numbers, a college education is an essential factor in helping people to have a better life and contribute to the prosperity of the economy. From the industry aspect, 85% of the current and future jobs require a college education, especially in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Based on this need, a college education in the STEM areas is a critical factor in helping people to develop a good career and support their family.<\/p>\n

Although going to college is important but NOT all colleges are the same, and not all students will be successful as expected. The major problem is many students are NOT ready for college as they are enrolling in college without any guidance and direction. The main cause for some unemployed graduates is they are only pursuing a degree rather than develop the skills needed by the job market. To prevent this problem, each university should provide career guidance for prospective students; and includes the list of fields of study taught in that school as well as the number of graduates who are working on the field that they are studying. Many schools do not like to provide these information and most college administrators are uncomfortable with the fact that they have a high number of unemployed graduates. In developed countries such as the U.S., Germany and UK there are college ranking systems where independent companies would collect these information and rank the university based on their academic trainings, their research, their field of study provided, and the most important measurements is the number of students getting jobs in relate to their field of study. The ranking information is the key to steer students toward making better choices and that is why high ranking universities always have very high numbers of applicants than others.<\/p>\n

I think providing information is the best approaches to improve education system where schools that have high number of employed graduates would rise to the top of the ranking system. By giving people more information, it will change the way some schools are operating. Many schools, especially for profit schools, are operating in their own short-term benefit over long-term educational goals. Some only focus on recruiting more students and making more money for their owners but ignore students and their future. Currently the worst situation is happening in China and India where thousands of private schools are allowed to open without any clear directions and oversight from government. This has led to seventeen million unemployed graduates in China and over twenty million unskilled college graduates in India. When I was in India, a manager told me: \u201cThe situation is so bad that college degree is now worthless. Before hiring programmer, we have all of them take a programming test and 85% of them failed even all of them have a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science. They all pay a lot of money for these private colleges but learn nothing. College education is becoming a \u201cbig scam\u201d in India.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before improvement can happen, I think what really important is having proper guidance for students and their family. The main problem is the lack of information and most people do not know about it. Of course they read newspapers about the high unemployment among college graduates but do they know about the causes. When I was in India, I asked students in my class about this situation and the surprising fact was many of them blamed the global recession instead of the poor education that some were receiving from \u201cfor profit\u201d colleges. When I was in China, I told students about the critical shortage of IT skilled people all over the world, most students were surprised and told me that they did not know about it. It is difficult for me to understand that in this connected world, many college students still do not know about what is happening in the world around them, especially something that is important to their future. When I mentioned that to a professor, he said: \u201cIf you ask them about movies stars and rock stars, they can tell you more than you even know. If you ask them about the latest video games or movies, they know a lot more but few would care about technology or economic news. If you look at all the newspapers, it is full of advertisings but not much information about career guidance. There is absolutely nothing to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n

What would help students to make good college choices? What would help students to select the right field of study? Having the right information is the best way for them and their family to decide which school to go to and what field to study. That means the information must be clear, simple, and available at right moments.
