Promoting learning<\/p>\n

A young teacher asked me: \u201cHow do you change student\u2019s attitude from \u201cstudy just to pass tests\u201d to learning the course materials? Most of my students are concerned about grades and tests rather than learning the content of the course. Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer: It seemed that these students have a \u201cshort-term\u201d goal of passing tests instead of \u201clong-term\u201d goal of obtaining the knowledge to build a career. Their motivation is study \u201cjust enough\u201d to pass tests so they can move on and graduate with a degree rather than achieve the higher goal of learning and being educated. As teacher, you need to know why they have such attitude because without understand it, you cannot help them.<\/p>\n

Based on my experiences, I would guess that some of them lack the career direction as they have not thoroughly thought about it. Some go to college because their friends are going and they just go along without any direction. Some may have a wrong idea that by passing tests they can get degree and having degree they can get job. Whatever their notions are, it is important to have a discussion and explain to them about their potential to achieve something if they are willing to change their attitude. If they understand how learning can make a difference in their future, they will change.<\/p>\n

College students are motivated when they see the benefits in what they are learning. In other word, if what they learn is in alignment with their goals, they will put in the efforts. Although most students are told about career planning when they started college but many did not pay attention or forget about it as they are distracted by other things. As teacher, you should remind them about the relevant of what they learn in your class and what they can do in their future career. For every class that I teach, I always begin with a short description of what I will teach on that day and the relevancy to students\u2019 learning goals by saying: \u201cToday we will learn about \u2026. By knowing this, you can do \u2026. And with this skill, you will be able to accomplish \u2026..” Since students are informed about what they will learn, what they can do, and how it will help them in their future, they will be motivated to learn. By clearly explain what they will learn on each day, it will create a learning atmosphere that allows teacher to teach and students to learn.<\/p>\n

By knowing what they will learn, what they can achieve, and how it helps them, students will understand that they are responsible for their future and be accountable for their learning. They will understand that it is not the test, it is not the degree but it is their knowledge and their skills that determine their future. You do not have to tell them like that but they know. You may want to bring some newspaper articles about unemployed graduates in class for discussion; get some articles about global unemployment to the class and share with them. Sometime it will open their eyes or at least open their minds about what are happening outside of their school. Today students must go beyond the classroom, the school, the city, and the country to understand the impact of the global economy. They must understand that changes are taking effect everywhere due to technologies. It is necessary to have more discussions on these topics as a motivation for learning.<\/p>\n

To make sure students will learn I have a weekly test every\u00a0Fridayso students will have to study all the time but they do not have to memorize a lot or cram at the last minutes. To avoid students arrive late, I often review key concepts that will be on the weekly test in the first ten minutes of the class so student who skip class or arrive late will have to get information from others. Thus by starting the class with a clear description of what I will teach each day or summarize what I like them to know will motivate students to attend class, arrive on time, and learn the course materials.<\/p>\n

In addition to class discussion that students must read before coming to class, I encourage students to share their own learning expectations and goals related to the course content. I ask them to read materials from newspapers, the Internet, or technical blogs and bring to class so we can discuss real examples. I often invite guest speakers from the industry to come and talk with students. These people can encourage them to learn more by sharing their views regarding the relevance of the learning concepts being taught. I also ask graduates who are working in the industry to share their experiences with current students as another way of motivating and help them to look further about a career in their technical field.<\/p>\n

Active learning is a mix of many activities that helps students to learn. It is a dynamic process that challenging them to think beyond the academic materials and promotes good learning habit.
