Telephone interview<\/p>\n

Last night I received an email marked \u201cUrgent\u201d from a Computer Science graduates: \u201cAfter reading your blog about U.S companies are hiring foreign students, I sent in my application and got an email from a software company arranging for me to have a telephone interview. I am very excited but also worry because I do not know what to expect in a telephone interview. Since the interview is next week, I need your advice. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: I sent a reply email to him immediately and post the answer in this blog to others who may have similar situation. Basically, companies use telephone interviews as a method of identifying potential candidates for employment. Telephone interviews are often the first step used to select candidates among many applicants for the next step, either to visit the company for additional interviews, or someone will come and interview the candidates in their country. It is very important to be prepared for a telephone interview. (Please see my previous posts on interview process)<\/p>\n

Depending on who will call you and the interview may take different paths. If the interviewer is from Human Resource, it is usually a screening interview to verify information on your application and check your communication and language skills. If you do well, there will be another interview with hiring managers. If the interviewer is the hiring manager then it is an actual interview as they want to know more about you and your capabilities. You must prepare for the telephone interview as you would any other interview.<\/p>\n

To prepare, you must read the job description carefully to know what they want. You must research the company to learn something about their business and prepare a list of questions that you want to ask. If you are talking on the mobile phone, make sure that your phone battery is charged and not about to run out. Be sure that you are talking in a quiet room that does not have any distraction. Have your resume, your notes, the job description, and your questions in front of you for quick reference. Make sure that you have a pen and paper to take notes. If the entire hiring committee is on the other end of the conference call, you may want to write down each person\u2019s name so you can refer to it later.<\/p>\n

You need to stay calm, speak slowly and clearly because your voice is all you have to create an impression in this first interview. You need to listen carefully for the questions and do not interrupt the interviewer. If you do not hear it well, politely ask them to repeat the question. You need to take a few moments to think carefully before answering but give complete answers. Your goal for this phone interview is to have a next interview so you need to convince them that you are a good candidate for the position. You need to be positive and enthusiastic so the interviewer will want to setup another interview or asking you to come in for a face-to-face interview.<\/p>\n

At the end of the interview, you must thank the interviewers for their time then follow-up with a thank you email.
