The last wish of Steve Jobs<\/p>\n

Before his death, Steve Jobs gave specific instructions to his managers on what he wanted to do. One of the important things that he wanted to achieve is to provide textbooks and education to the world. He said: \u201cEducation is about giving students the tools they need for personal empowerment and self-realization. Technology is nothing without people. The most important thing is to have faith in people, that they are basically good and smart, and if you give them tools they will do wonderful things.”<\/p>\n

To do that, Steve Jobs created the \u201ciBooks\u201d where millions of textbooks can be organized and sold at \u201creasonable price\u201d just like what he did with \u201ciTunes\u201d to sell music. He also created \u201cITunesUniversity\u201d where thousands of courses will be taught online for anyone who want to learn. He told Walter Isaacson, the person who wrote his Biography: \u201cThe textbook industry is corrupt, they price their books too high and poor people cannot afford them. But if we can make the textbooks cheap or free of charge and they come with the iPad, then many people will have a chance to access to what they need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Water Isaacson explained: \u201cSteve Jobs had his sights set on textbooks as the next business for Apple. He wanted to hire textbook writers to develop textbooks and make them a feature of the iPad so many people can get access to these books.” Of course people who were in the textbooks business and people who sold books criticized Jobs: \u201cThat is only a clever tactics to sell more iPads.\u201d A bookstore owner told newspapers: \u201cApple’s textbooks strategy is tied directly to the iPad. Using this strategy, Apple will deal with textbooks companies directly and eliminate bookstores. Steve\u2019s goal is to tie textbook purchases to iPad purchases and it is a business decision that has nothing to do with education. He said that he wanted to help the poor but they could not afford to buy iPads.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fact is Apple\u2019s competitor, Amazon also sells textbooks online and through Amazon\u2019s Kindle; other tablets such as Samsung Notes, Microsoft\u2019s Surface and other Google\u2019s tablets also do the same so Apple is not the only place to buy textbooks. A business analyst commented: \u201cSteve Jobs is interested in controlling the end-user experience; he does not like others to read textbooks on Android tablets or Amazon\u2019s Kindle. He wants everybody to use Apple\u2019s products and that is his competitive nature.\u201d But for people who knew him, they all saying that he had a great passion for education and he only wanted to give people, especially poor people in developing countries more chances to get access to the best education so they can help themselves. A textbook writer explained: \u201cSteve Jobs does not need to have textbooks to sell iPads; people are standing in line to buy Apple\u2019s products. He only wants reasonable priced textbooks or give it out to poor students in developing countries so they have equal opportunities with others. He is different from Bill Gates who gives a lot of money to the poor. Steve Jobs does not give money but he gives them dignity, he wants them to help themselves. He does not give them fishes to eat but wants to teach them how to fish so they can be independent on their own. A completely different charity view from others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs once told university students: “Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you, and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build things that other people can use. Education is a tool people can use to help others to realize their ideas and influence their reality. At Apple, we are attempting to develop tools that teachers can use to deliver training. These tools are now available in over 50 countries and it is a good thing for teachers, particularly in countries with limited access to a good education. ITunes University Course manager gives teachers the ability to integrate their own course documents into part of bigger curriculum where students can easily access and learn. There are hundreds of thousands of textbooks on the \u201ciBooks Store,\u201d over 750,000 course materials from existing ITunesUniversity and more than one million Apple apps to download. The \u201ciBooks Textbooks\u201d now covers 100 percent of the U.S high school core curriculum and the GCSE core curriculum in the UK. This extension of the service to additional countries should help deliver better education to more people effectively, and create more opportunity for anyone who wants to learn.<\/p>\n
