Technical and business skills<\/p>\n

A third year computer science student wrote to me: \u201cWhy do you suggest that technical people to learn about business? I understand that I need soft skills but why do I need business knowledge? I do not want to work in accounting, finance or management. Please explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today the functional organization structure is getting obsolete and the boundaries between domains is disappearing. Regardless where you work, you need to have some knowledge about the business of your company. Software developers who also have knowledge of the business are more valuable to the company than someone who only have technical skills.<\/p>\n

After graduate, you may work as a software developer for few years but you may also get promoted to management position. Company often selects technical people who have good understanding the company\u2019s business into management position. By having business knowledge you can help company owners and senior managers to make technical decisions that can help the company to succeed. As college students, it would be beneficial to take some business courses to broaden your knowledge and strengthen your skills. Many students confuse business skills with accounting or finance skills but the needed business skills are process improvement, relationship management, business intelligence, enterprise architecture, project management, and contract management. The two most important skills that technical people need are project management and business analysis.<\/p>\n

Project management is the ability to organize and manage works with people from different areas that can result in work being completed within time and budget. Business analysis (also called systems analysis, requirements engineer) is the ability to understand and analyze company\u2019s needs or users\u2019 need to support projects. Today many companies are beginning to use cloud computing, security, big data analytics, mobile applications in their business. By having business knowledge, you can utilize these technologies quickly and combine them to improve the company\u2019s business and deliver results. Having only technical skills are not good enough in this dynamic and constantly changing market. Since business and technology skills are essential for the business to grow, to succeed in your career you need both skills to move up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
