Team learning<\/p>\n

Today college students are facing the challenges of adjusting their knowledge and skills to the rapidly changing technology as their training programs may not be able to change quickly. What was \u201cHot\u201d few years ago may not be \u201cHot\u201d anymore. The platform and technology that they learned few years ago may be obsolete by now and they must quickly learn new things that are needed by the industry in order to get hired. Twenty years ago, Pascal and C are the key programming languages but today they are Java, C++, Python and Ruby and soon may be something else. Few years ago, if you can code, you can get a job but today you need more than just programming skills to get hired, you also need soft-skills, foreign languages skills, and business knowledge. These things put a lot of pressure on students but if they can overcome them, they will be highly reward as the salaries of skilled graduates are increasing faster than anything else.<\/p>\n

The new rule is: \u201cWhat you know is not good enough but how fast can you learn when things change\u201d. That is why every college student must adapt a lifelong learning attitude by developing good learning habits. They need to read more about technology, innovations as well as market trends in the world to broaden their knowledge because with globalization, they may not be working in the local market but global market. Today 65% of technology skilled workers are mobile workers, that means they do not work in their country but travel and work in other places, wherever their skills are needed. In this globalized world, certain demand from one place can be filled quickly by either \u201coutsource\u201d works to another places or \u201cImport\u201d workers to meet demand. Several years ago, IT outsourcing was the trend but today importing workers is preferred as host countries do not \u201cExport jobs\u201d but bringing workers who will stay, paying taxes, and help develop the economy.<\/p>\n

Since technologies change fast, it is impossible to learn everything by yourself, a better way to develop new knowledge is to learn in team where members take turn to scan the technology market for interest then share with others. A team is a group of people who share the same purpose and goals. As long as the goals are clear, the team will work together to achieve them. Of course, it takes time for a team to form because you have many people who do not know each other but work together. Sometime conflicts will happen before members can overcome them and become a good team. The advantage of team learning is that being a part of a team helps its members to learn new things quickly. Since team members have the same purpose, they all gain from sharing their knowledge and experience with others. Learning can happen since knowledge and experiences are exchanged extensively among team members. Any new thing learned by one member can quickly propagated among others and every new member joining the team can brings some new knowledge or challenge the way things are done and bring in new perspective that team members may overlook.<\/p>\n

Team learning does not happen naturally but it must be planned to get performance and results. Once you have established rules for the team where team members will work together, the rest becomes easier. Team learning is about setting goals, sharing responsibility, assigning tasks, providing feedback, and conducting reviews to track progress. The rules are to achieve common understanding among members to promote cooperation and establish trust. When done well, learning will take place as every member\u2019s learning goal is align with the team\u2019s learning goals.
