Letter to first year students<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI am a first year student in the Software Engineering (SE) program. Even I spent three months in the program, I still feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed by so many materials to study. I did not have much time like friends who study other fields as I had so much to learn. My teacher said that most SE students may not have enough time to even sleep because the program is hard. Why SE is so different from others? I want to succeed and have a good career but I am also frustrated too. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: It takes time to build a good study habit. When you get used to it, you will feel more comfortable. Today the education system is changing, especially in the technology area. We are living in a competitive global world in which everything is happening at fast pace.\u00a0Information Technology (IT) is changing every job, every workplace, and every industry. As SE students, you are leading this change as other fields will eventually have to change too, but maybe not yet. The old tradition of \u201cStudy hard, get degree, get good job.\u201d is becoming obsolete. Today you need to study hard but also smarter. You need to learn more and continue to learn faster to succeed. The idea of working one job for one company for the rest of your life is a thing of the past.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s high-wage careers require higher skills and current skills, which means you have to adopt a \u201cLifelong learning\u201d attitude. To build this skill, you will need to read a lot of materials in the first year of college since many high school students do not have good reading habit. By reading more, you expand your knowledge and develop a curiosity to want more. The more you learn, the more you know; and the more you know, the better you can direct your study\u2019s direction to build a good career. University\u2019s job is to help provide students with as many lifelong learning opportunities as possible. I think as SE and ISM students, you are the first group of students being exposed to these new learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

Do not compare yourself with others. Be with students in SE and ISM as they are your teammates. They are people who travel side by side with you in this discovering journey. They are people who share with you their frustrations as well as their passions. They will encourage you as you will encourage them, as you all need friends. Please consider that you are the pioneers that travel ahead of everyone to discover things and pave the way, the others will follow. Think about life ahead; think about what you can achieve few years from now; think about the differences that you and your friends can make; think about what you can do to make your family proud; think about what you can contribute to your society; think about what you can contribute to your country as responsible citizens; think about the career that you will get; think about the knowledge that you have acquired and ready to share with others; think about how much you can help other people by lifting them up from poverty; think about being a professional and start your own company; think about being a scientists and contribute to humanities, and many more.<\/p>\n

I know it is difficult to be a first year college student, especially in a new field that requires a lot more than others. I believe with courage and passion, you will overcome these obstacles and achieve you goals. It is always hard at the beginning but when you are well on your way, things will be much easier.
