High demand skills<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI am a first year student in Computer Science. I want to know what skills do I need to have by the time I graduate. I have read your blog about Mobile, Big data, Cloud computing and Security but in my country most jobs only require programming and testing skills. I am confused and do not know which is the right direction? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: It seems your country\u2019s information technology market has not caught up with the rest of the world yet but it will and the demand will change. In the past ten years, the global economy has become so connected so whatever happen in one place will spread to others. Sooner or later certain skills such as Cloud computing Security, Mobile, and Big data will be needed in your country. Currently technology companies in your country are strictly focusing on outsourcing business because the local market is still underdeveloped but it will change. You need to look into the future rather than what is happening today to plan your career. As a computer science student, you will learn about programming and testing in school but you need to develop your own knowledge and skills beyond what school can teach you. I think in one to four years, the demand in your country will be in Mobile applications development and Software as a Service or Cloud computing. By the time you graduate, you may need these skills to get a good job.<\/p>\n

To develop skills in mobile application, you need to know about Apple\u2019s IOS, Google\u2019s Android, or Microsoft\u2019s Windows 8. You must know how to create a site that can be viewed and navigated from small devices such as the mobile phones or tablets. Today sales of tablets and smartphones have reached over five billion devices and more people are using smartphone to do work, check emails, surf the web than PC. There are \u201cwearable devices\u201d such as Samsung\u2019s smart-watches and Google\u2019s glass being introduced last year and I think there will be more mobile devices being built in the near future. Therefore mobile apps development skills will be in high demand as the mobile market is much bigger than the PC market twenty years ago.<\/p>\n

Software as a Service – Cloud computing is another area that will grow big. However this skill is mostly taught in the Information System Management, not in computer science. As more companies are moving to the cloud to reduce cost the demand will be high. In the next year, you may see the combination of mobile and cloud computing into a new thing since the storage on mobile is limited so people will have to store things in the cloud. Mobile and cloud maybe the biggest thing in the next few years and demand for these skills will be exploding.<\/p>\n

Computing security is important but this skill is mostly taught in advanced degree program. If you decide to continue to a Master degree, computing security would be a very good choice. I am sure every company will need that skills and currently there is a shortage of computing security workers all over the world.<\/p>\n

However, beside technical skills, you need to develop soft-skills and foreign language skills too. These skills will clearly give you an advantage over others because a technical skill alone is NOT enough. The global economy is recovering, it will expand to many countries and companies will need to hire more workers. As the business improves, it will drive the need for more tech workers with all types of skill, from the basic skills like programming and testing to specialized skills such as mobile and security but soft skills and foreign language skills will be the key factors on which company to work for and how much you will make.
