The STEM solution<\/p>\n

The stories are similar all over the world, government\u2019s study found that unemployment rates among college graduates are higher than previous predictions but job prospects vary by fields of study. Basically unemployment is higher in nontechnical fields such as Arts, Music, Philosophy, History, Literature, Finance, and Architecture. Graduates who studied Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) do NOT have that problem and also have high earnings.<\/p>\n

From Europe to Asia, the technology is changing and driving the global economic recovery. Industrial countries are seeing significant changes toward advanced manufacturing with robots and automation; mobile communication allows medical doctors to work with patients in rural areas; Broadband Internet connects every people on earth etc., to meet these technology changes, skilled workers are needed. In most countries, jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have grown at a rate four times faster than other non-STEM jobs and this momentum will continue for at least twenty years as there is a critical shortage of skilled workers.<\/p>\n

Few years ago, the financial crisis had devastated the economy of many countries. To improve it, economists have suggested governments invest money to companies to stimulated productivity and growth. It worked well in developed countries but not in developing countries because these countries did not have the well-established industries to be stimulated and recover, their economies are agriculture based and stimulation did not work. In this globalized world, competition happens rapidly as big companies have taken the advantage of open trades to expand their markets and wipe out local companies which bring out high unemployment. All over the world, the number of bankrupt local companies has risen to all time high and this situation will continue in developing countries unless they can develop their own competitive advantages to reduce unemployment and improve their economies.<\/p>\n

The best solution is to create high-tech well-paid workforces to take advantage of the current worldwide shortage and develop a high tech industry to reduce unemployment. This is what Ireland is doing and among European countries, Ireland is the only one that have recovered quickly and faster than any others. (see my blog on Ireland) Basically, everything must start with STEM education, from high schools to college as STEM jobs do require a college degree. By ignoring STEM education at this time, developing countries will miss a great opportunity and deny their current and next generation a chance to improve their lives, and a chance to improve their economy. To create a competitive advantage, an advanced education that focuses on STEM with new curricula, new trainings, and new teaching methods is essential.
