Read as a good habit<\/p>\n

Last week Dave Foster, a startup company founder came to my class to talk about his special software that help professors measure students\u2019 reading. He said: \u201cWhen students use textbooks, professors have no idea whether students read them or not. But as materials are posted online, everything students do can be monitored, including the details of their reading habits. My software can track students\u2019 reading behavior: how much time they spend on reading, how many pages they read, whether they skip anything, and data will be processed into a score for each student as well as a report to professors.\u201d<\/p>\n

By tracking students\u2019 reading, professors can approach students who did not complete their reading or skip many important pages and provide additional guidance. Dave told the class: \u201cToday many students do not read before class; they come to class expect to be told on what to do. However reading is becoming a critical factor at college level because current teaching method is focusing more on learning and applying rather than just memorize facts as in the past. If students do not read before class, they will not be able to apply anything and often fail. Few students realize that today teaching method has changed to meet industry\u2019s demand. The day of lecturing and remember formulas are gone. To succeed students must know how to apply their knowledge to solve problems which means they must read more.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded: \u201cMy software can help you to succeed. There are many students who want to buy this software to track their reading habit. My software will let them know how well they are reading as compare with others. Of course it is up to your professor and your school to use it as long as students know that they are being monitored. We have talked to many parents and they loved it. Anything that make their children\u2019s succeed are welcomed.\u201d<\/p>\n

After he left, I asked for students\u2019 opinion. More than half of the class were concerned about the reading surveillance as an invading in their life. A student said: \u201cWhat I read or not read is my own and I do not want anybody to track it. This tool is a spy for professors.\u201d Another student protested: \u201cIt is strange to have textbooks watching the readers and report on them, this technology have gone too far.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told my class that I will never use this kind of software. I believe that students are responsible for their own learning. Although reading is one of the important factor for their success but it is up to them to decide how to study, what to read and when to read. I always encourage students to read more, not just what my course requires but anything that interested them as they need to broaden their knowledge because life is much more than what school can teach. Reading helps them to develop general knowledge about the world that they live in. Today so many students have limited knowledge of the world and what is happening as they do not have good reading habit. Without knowing all these facts of the world around them, they may miss important things. Reading opens their minds to new vocabulary that they may not know and by having a rich source of words to use, they can speak better and write better. Basically, the more they read, the better they write.<\/p>\n

I told them: \u201cMany of you only focus on reading what the school ask you and miss half of what you can learn because life is much more than what the school can teach you. Only by reading more, you can fill in that gap. You do not have to read technical books but just read whatever interest you, be it romantic novels, history novels, or fictional novels. You can read at anywhere, at any time as you can start and stop whenever you wanted. You can follow the book and let your imagination soar in your own way and let the story carry you along. If you want to learn a foreign language, try to read them in that language then you will see how much you improve your language skills. Today with the Internet, there are so many good articles available at your convenience. When I was young, I often went to the library to read and sometime the book that I wanted was borrowed by someone and I had to wait several weeks. With laptops, tablets and smartphones you can read almost anything and anywhere so develop a good reading habit and you will see how much you will learn.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
