Preparing for college<\/p>\n

Before going to college, many high school graduates are facing difficult questions of deciding which university to attend and what field to study. Some students will select any university that accept them and study anything that they like. However some would listen to their parents\u2019 advices and select what the parents wanted but the question is do parents know what school would be best and which career is in high demand? In the U.S many parents are monitoring the job market and often rely on the Bloomberg\u2019s job market prediction and the U.S News & World Report on college ranking to advise their children but in Asia, parents often rely on the school\u2019s reputation and trends that happened when they were students instead of tracking the current local job markets. When I taught in China, I often heard parents said: \u201cThere is nothing better than Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical.\u201d and encourage their children to achieve \u201cThe highest degree possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

Today time has changed as the world is being impacted by many things that some old rules may no longer be valid. Currently the best fields of study are STEM: Science (Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical etc.) Technology (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information System Management etc.) Engineering (Electrical, Electronic, Chemical etc.) and Math (Statistics, Actuary etc.). Of course science fields such as Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical are all great careers but are they the best investment today? Let\u2019s consider the time and efforts students must spend in these special schools: About ten years for medical; eight years for dental; and seven years to be a pharmacist and their salaries as compare to a software developer with a bachelor\u2019s degree and eight years of experience who specialized in Data analytics or Computer Security then you can see that there is a big difference.<\/p>\n

The worst mistake high school students could made is NOT to decide on which field to study and wait until they go to college to take sample of courses to see which one is best for them. These students often select the easy subjects that give them a lot of time to enjoy life. By the time they graduate, many learn that a degree is not a guarantee for job and as they face the reality, it is too late and many be part of the unemployed graduates. Basically if you do not make decision before go to college, you may miss a good opportunity. Most career\u2013oriented programs such as science, technology, engineering, and math, often have limit enrollment. If you do not enroll soon, you may find it difficult to get in later. My advice is to prepare as soon as possible, as top schools are very selective, good career-oriented fields of study have limit number of acceptance, you must be prepared WHEN YOU ARE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL to make sure that you get in. You need to talk to the school\u2019s admissions counselors and understand their requirements so you will understand the feasibility of getting accepted.<\/p>\n

Students often have expressed their views to me that they are not sure whether they have a passion for technology or engineering? Or whether they can overcome some obstacles and complete the rigorous college training. Of course, that is a lot to ask as many high school students are not matured enough or really know what they want. This is where parents should be involved to encourage and provide support as they understand the situation and the job market demand. For many years of teaching, I never found a diligent student that cannot overcome certain academic difficulties as most obstacles are in their mind. If they think programming is difficult than they would not take programming course; if they think math is difficult than they would avoid math but if they are willing to put in the efforts, most will succeed. This is why students need to build a better relationship with teachers. Teachers would spend more time to support any students, if they are willing to work hard. I had many students who came to my Software Engineering courses with hesitation and told me that they would try to see if they can pass the course. I told them to talk to my graduates who are working in the industry and other unemployed graduates who study some easy courses then make a decision. In the end, most come to my class and determine to complete it. I told them: \u201cIf you take my class as a trial, you will see that it is difficult then you will quit. If you determine to finish it then you will be successful. It is my job to support you all the way if you also put in your efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
