My first assignment for students<\/p>\n

Every teacher wants to see students study hard, become motivate and participate more in class activities. The fact is many college students do not know what they want. Many go to class without direction, without career goal, and without any motivation to learn. If students do not participate in class, they will not learn much and without learning, they will not develop the skills needed for them to get a job. In every country, there are many college graduates without job, without future, without hope, and they become burden to their family and society.<\/p>\n

Several years ago, when preparing materials for the \u201cIntroduction to software engineering\u201d class, I was asking myself “How can I get these 18 or 19 year-old students to think about their career in this field?” So I decided to do an experiment. On the first day of classes, I gave students an assignment and one week to do it. I heard many students complained that I was so \u201chard\u201d by given homework at the first day of class. The assignment requires each student to answer a numbers of questions to get them to think about their future. For example \u201cWhat type of job that you think you will get after graduated? What skills do you need to get that job? What type of job that you think you will do when you are 30 years old? What skills do you think you will need by that time? What type of job you think you will do when you are 50 years old? What skills do you think you will need at that time?\u201d And the last question: \u201cWhat type of person you might be when you are 65 years old.\u201d Students can use any imagination to develop a vision for their future but they must research and provide me with some factual information about the needed skills.<\/p>\n

Today with the internet it is easy to get information about certain positions and required skills. Students can type in a desired position in Google than they can get all the required skills that they need to complete the homework. This assignment helps students to connect the course material to positions that they may do in the future. It helps them to develop a vision for their career and helps them to understand the differences between a job and a career. Afterward, many students told me that they had never thought about themselves in the future like this. No one has asked them to do research on career or to determine what they might be able to do in the future. They never know about certain positions and the skills required until working on this assignment. The assignment was successful in getting students to think about their future career and their future life. It also helped them to connect the course material with what they will do in their career. By getting students to think about themselves in the future, they understand about the need to continue to learn and develop a lifelong learning attitude.<\/p>\n

By reading what the students wrote, it gave me more information about my students. Each of them had interesting things to tell about their hopes and their dreams. Even some were na\u00efve but by knowing what they know and what they think, I can give them better guidance. The assignment also provided me more insight into my students so I can develop better relationships with them. It also lets me know about certain misconceptions that some students think about their career that I could then explain and corrected them in my course.<\/p>\n
