Being a Teacher<\/p>\n

A young teacher wrote to me: \u201cI teach computer sciences in an university where classroom is crowded, students are not motivated, textbooks are obsolete, and the workload is overwhelmed. I am frustrated and think about changing job to work in the industry but I like to have your advices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: I do not know whether you have other reason than just unhappy with the current teaching situation. There are always challenges in teaching works, sometime we are frustrated and start questioning about our choice. However we need to remember the reason that motivates us to choose the teaching career. Nobody would choose this career to make money or to get rich. Nobody would choose this career to get famous or to get job. People who choose to be teachers know about the challenges of teaching but they still do it because they care. It is important that we remember our initial purpose to educate young minds, to contribute to students\u2019 lives, as well as our passion to teach. We want to influence the lives of young people so they can be good people, good children to their parents, good citizens to our country, and have skills to contribute to our economy.<\/p>\n

Teaching is more than just transfer the technical knowledge but to help students to develop valuable skills so they can be productive. Teaching is about sharing our passion in learning with students. Teaching is about helping students to apply what they learn in a real world. The reason that we read more books, learn new materials is to improve our knowledge so we can ensure that our students have the best knowledge so they can do something useful for their lives. We require students to reflect, analyze, and synthesize information so they can organize new information in their thinking and fully developed their skills and change their lives.<\/p>\n

Teaching is about creating a bridge that helps students to cross over the river of ignorance. Teaching is about creating a path for them to go in their learning journey so they can become a responsible person for themselves, for their family, and for the country. Through our teachings, various opportunities are open for them as they struggle in their learning journey and in the end we lead them to successes in their lives. Students always look up to teachers as they learn the skills in life to build relationships with others. What they learn from teachers is more than knowledge and skills but also to see other perspectives and seek opportunities to help others too.<\/p>\n

As teachers, we should reflect on our contributions on many students\u2019 lives and the unique gifts that we offer. Instead of asking ourselves \u201cWhat am I doing in this school?\u201d, we should affirm our commitment that \u201cWe are here to teach and influence the life of the students and develop the next skilled professional for our industry, and the best citizens to our country!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
