Admission to U.S schools<\/p>\n

I received a letter from an Asian father who wrote: \u201cMy son is a good student but he does not have a perfect score as compare with other students who are applying to top U.S. schools. He ranks high in his class but to get to top U.S schools, he will have to compete with top students with higher test scores and impressive CVs to get financial aids. We really want to send him to top schools and need your advice. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Most Asian parents want to have their children go to top U.S. schools and have the best education possible. The fact is top schools\u2019 admission is very competitive and they only select well-prepared students who can handle strong pressure to compete. However, there are many very good schools in the U.S. and you need to do research to find the school that is suitable for your son. (There are several university ranking systems but the most popular is U.S News & World Report on Universities and Colleges:http:\/\/grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-science-schools?int=37e059<\/a>\u00a0)<\/p>\n

Most top schools are selective, only students with the highest scores would get in; even they are in, they will have to compete with others who are very good to get better grades. However if your son go to very good schools that ranked number 10 to 25 in the U.S News & World report, he may do much better as most students will be at the same level as his, therefore it is much less pressure.<\/p>\n

I understand that top universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford held very high regard in Asia but it does not means these schools are better than schools that ranked few notches below them. The ranking often changes every year so among the top 10 or top 20, the education systems are similar to some degrees. My advice is to apply to both top 10 and top 25 universities for better chance of getting in. Many Asian parents do not know much about U.S schools system so they often refer to well-known schools instead of conducting thorough research for the schools that better fit for their children. Regarding financial aids, there is a big misconception among many Asian students that they can get financial support in U.S Schools. Although there are financial scholarships in top schools but most are for students in the PhD level and only very few for Master or Bachelor\u2019s degree. The notion of go to U.S schools and get paid for is misleading, when apply to these schools, your son needs to be flexible because if he insists of getting financial aids, and the school does not have funding, he will get rejected. Of course, there are many bogus and for profit schools that offer scholarships but you also have to be careful as many are not accredited and their degree is worthless. Since you want your son to go to top schools, you may avoid these types of school.<\/p>\n

Your son needs to apply to at least 10 to 20 schools instead of 3 or 5 as the competition is fierce. Even he gets in, you may still have to pay for his education but when you are looking at the return of investment of a good education it is still very good. Depending on what he studies, If his degree is in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) he could get good job with very good salary.
