A student wrote to me: \u201cAs a first year student in Information System Management (ISM), I am planning to take both technical and business courses as you suggested but is there anything else that I need to learn to succeed in this career?<\/p>\n

Answer: We are living in a fast changing world; the best advice that I can give to every student is to be flexible to meet changing business needs. In the past, technical skills are good enough to get a good job but today the complexities of work require much broader skills and flexibility. Every IT students must have the knowledge and skills required to work in a changing environment. You must read more to understand both technology trends and market trends so you can prepare. Even university teaches you most of the technical skills required to deliver products and services but that is only the beginning. As you work, you will learn more and as long as you adopt a lifelong learning attitude, you will do well.<\/p>\n

Beside technical skills, you also need to develop organization skills to prioritize work in respond to business needs, and work collaboratively with a group of people. You will need problem solving skills required to analyze issues within a specialty area to achieve quality and technical solutions. You need to develop communication skills to effectively exchange information in order to understand the needs of customers, respond to their needs, and achieve user satisfaction. Most of all, you need to develop a sense of accountability to make right decisions and take responsibility for your work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
